Just Bought a VRS (All i can see is problems on here) Should i be worried?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have just purchased a 2011 VRS with 26000 miles on it, had no issues so far and the car seems fine :). however reading through these threads, I am starting to think 'have I made the right decision'. I spent 9.5k on the car as it has every extra skoda offered and that's why appealed to me. 9.5k is a lot for a car that is a money pit.

First of all Oil consumption is this a case of manually checking oil levels every so often or is it monitored by the car? I cant seem to find info in my manuals etc.

also what issues should I look out for in particular.

any help is much appreciated.

also this is my first car with a turbo too any issues with them ?

newer cars are weird to me as I have only had olders cars like:

POLO G40

POLO GT

POLO 1.6 Gti

BMW E46 318

so this skoda is completely different to what I know.

Congrats and welcome to the club!

I'd just enjoy the car and worry later if anything crops up. Most are absolutely fine. Remember that this is a forum where people go to seek advice on problems with their car -it's not necessarily representative of the general vRS population i.e the old "why are there so many sick people in this hospital?" analogy.

It is worth occasionally dipping the oil -although how to do this remains a controversial subject , on this forum at least. It is generally recommended to dip the oil on level ground when the engine has been warmed up.

A yellow oil warning light should come in when the level is low but most people advise not waiting for this to come on. The dipstick seems so erratic tho that I'd avoid checking too often as you can inadvertently convince yourself there is an oil issue when there may not be. Maybe dip it once a month?

I don't recall any turbo issues being reported on here so don't worry about that.

Tom

Hey :)  Hope your enjoying the new car!

Wouldn't worry too much, the majority of these models are okay, but its a pretty active forum here so there's a lot of posts and info regards the oil usage issues.  Plenty of more positive info too and a great source of general info.

Yeah, check the oil manually and if it's using a lot, it might be worth noting down the mileage and how much your topping up.

If your worried though, it could be worth thinking about an extended warranty from Skoda (or other third parties offer them).  I think its about £300 to get another 2 years warranty after the standard 3-yr warranty.  If it does turn out to use more oil than the 'normal' amount specified by Skoda, you should be able to get it fixed under warranty.

Cheers Tom!,

Like I say the car is running fine, I am loving the DSG system. I plan to keep on top of maintenance properly on this car, so I am trying to gain as much knowledge as possible. :)

Thanks Ross, I am going to Skoda tomorrow to let them take photos of my alloys as they have started to corrode and they say it should be covered. i will chat with them about taking a extended warranty out ! for sake of a couple of hundered quid :)

Just enjoy.

If there are any oil burning issues they will soon manifest themselves. If you have any worries as mentioned above just keep a note of how much added and when. Dip the oil as per the handbook, not when cold, but as Tom said the dipstick is not the best.

If the car is standard then you may wish to consider fitting the Eibach approved springs which will drop the ride hide by about an inch and helps to improve the handling and if you want fit a RARB as well. Probably the two best mods without resorting to re maps etc.

Go have fun and enjoy your new toy.

Enjoy it, only about 2 out of 10 have had problems, so there are 8 goods ones in each 10..

At 3 Years old get the Brake Fluid Changed,

& maybe consider getting new Spark Plugs at the 3 year service or about then rather than wait until 40,000 miles.

OIL,Owners manual page 167,  168

checked hot, Normal Operating Temperature, the Translation is not good in the manual.

the VW Handbook reads correctly.

Best to run it on 98 or 99 ron petrol.

A Skoda Extended Warranty is £399 for a year, or £547 for 2 years,

I would Stick with the Skoda Warranty.

You should be able to get cheaper services than that.

When they are taking pictures of the wheels,

be sure to check the front and rear Skoda Round Badge and see it is OK and not cloudy.

I have only filled up twice since buying the car 3 weeks back 700 mile i achieved on 2 tanks average 39.4 MPG is that decent ? i have been using Shell V power Nitro is that any good?,

also the wheel badges seem fine, on 3 alloys it has started corroding around the lip and on the other most of the face is now started.

I plan to service the car next month, waiting for pay day :).

I will take out a warranty I think with skoda for 2 years

RARB? Rear anti roll bar?

Edited by VrsJoe

Not the wheel badge the ones Centre of the Hatch and Bonnet. JUst look closely and see if any corrosion in them.

V-Power Nitro is fine,

Tesco Momentum 99 will cost £2.50 a tank less and i prefer, even if it cost £2.50 ,more i would use it.

Rear ARB, Anti Roll Bar, under the rear end,  check the Pics in 'Sharkriders Build Thread, it is an Estate but you will see the idea.

Or do a search.

Wheels,

if around the lip they might knock that back, as a Tyre Changer being hopeless or Kerbing.

White Spider on the Spokes and no Damage, they know what is wrong with Dark chrome Gigaro.

Warranty issue.

I wouldn't say worried but do be alert - I had very high confidence in my car for over a year, with absolutely minimal oil use. Then suddenly a few months ago oil light came on and took about a litre to top-up! I think it's safe to say it will use some oil, just how much. Bear in mind the manufacturers tolerance level is extremely high, as in lots of oil used in a short distance.

Thanks all 4 wheels are similar to the pics you have attached, ill see what they say worth a shot !

I will use Tesco momentum next :)

cheers for the info

Check the oil every week.

Drive it like you stole it.

And enjoy!

I beleive the extended waranty skoda dealers sell for a 3 year old skoda is from car care plan. An actual skoda manufacturers  waranty can only be extended to 5 years if you buy this as an optional extra on a brand new car at the time of ordering.

http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/warranty/extended-warranty/reasons-to-extend-your-cover

"Please note that an extended warranty is only available on new vehicles at the time of ordering." (copied from same page)

If you are in the CSMA the car care plan is £144 a year (on line price) for a car up to 5 years old and under 60k miles.

Edited by bobjob49

On a 3 year old vRs with 28,000 miles it is showing at £180 a year on a online quote.

A good price and cheaper would be even better.

enjoy your car. I get mine next week :)

That's my old car, it's already had a new engine, the letters in the paperwork I handed over when I traded it in.

Any questions let me know.

And Skoda actually called me today it needs the hearted seat elements changing, and I tried the warrenty with the alloys and they went having any of it

Not even 1000 miles on the clock and SWMBO's needs a new set of dash clocks as there are all different lights coming on (as well as the ones that are supposed to). Apparently this seems to be a bit common as the part is on back order and our dealer is waiting for 3 sets.

Joe,

The only thing that has very slightly marred my ownership is reading this forum :D.

You get a lot of car for not much money - enjoy!

Cheers

Brian

Why did you trade it in mate, were there any ongoing issues? Had the oil consumption been resolved?!

VrsJoe,

Were you told it had a replacement engine, and is it written up in the Service Manual,  Date Engine Changed and at what milage?

The oil and filter changes and engine servicing is now out of sink with the car Mileometer.

(& the new engine should have in new spark plugs so they should not need changed, but you need Skoda to provide the Invoice for the Warranty work to know what was done at the time, and a list of replacement parts used.)

I hope the Dealer your bought from has provided a warranty.

You need a Letter from Skoda UK that confirms the Engine was replaced & the Oil Use Resolved,

because Warranties do not cover known issues.

That is at the time a warranty is being taken out.

You do not have a known issue, it is repaired or should be.

But,

Another member currently with a Cer in to get a consumption test and who needs a new engine has the Warranty Company unwilling to pay.

Sk4gw You trying to worry him?

Joe don't panic I only traded it in last month so I know all about the car.

The servicing is up to date, and at the right time as you will see.

They didn't write in the service book but it's in the Skoda system so any dealer can see the details and any of them can give you the details.

And why do we hope he got a warrenty - you are flat out trying to worry him

No the opposite.

Trying to have him not worry.

You know the Information, and because he came here, now he can.

** constantly here we advise, check with Skoda UK before you buy used, if the Dealer will not tell you the Warranty History.

& that new engines are not a problem when fitted properly, but some garages do not,

like a used vRS last weekend on its 3rd engine. & the Dealer had to be asked.**

He gets the information now, All the Information, and he has a car that does not use oil, so that is good.

Then a Warranty.

No warranty on a vRS if you want to keep it for 2 or 3 years is a big gamble.

& £4,000 gamble. if you need to get an engine.

&

Possibly a £9,500 gamble if you can not afford to buy an engine.

You used the Warranty i imagine to get the New Engine Fitted,

well some replacement engines have already failed.

I like the cars, and own and bought, but Buyer Beware,   then once you know the story  you just enjoy them.
