Fabia 1.2 12v vs 1.4 16v

Featured Replies

Well i drive a 1.2 12v and today i've had the oppertunity to drive the 1.4 16v (last time i drove one was test drive but had only just passed test so couldnt really comment as not used to cars). IMO, or is it just me? but the 1.2 feels a damn site more powerfull compared to the 1.4, which is strange

Is the 1.3 a three cyclinder?

The 14 16v is 100hp and should fly compared to the 1.2 ?

It might have been a 1.4 8v ?? Which has a touch more power than the 1.2 ???

Yep gotta agree. First courtesy car I had when I dropped in my 1.9 TDI was a 1.4-16v and it did feel gutless (maybe due to the lack of torque) and very slow. Next time I dropped my car in for a service, I had a 1.2-12v (which I assumed was a 1.4!) and that felt quite lively around the country lanes and in town, although I didn't get to really stretch it's legs on the motorway, where I suspect the 1.4 would be better. :D I also didn't like the super-light clutch of the petrols, but I seem to be alone in that

Chris

The 1.2 is a madly free revving engine, can rev to 6k in milliseconds (well, almost). I expect the 1.4 is asthmatic in the old VW way.

Last time I dropped my 1.4 16v off for a service I had the 1.2 as a loan car. Definitely very nippy, but really ran out of steam when you got to a dual carriageway.

Around town it felt about the same really, although definitely more revvy :)

Before ordering my Fabia VRS last month I went to my VW dealer to see what they had and check out the face lift Polo.

I currently drive a 1.2 8v 65ps Polo and at the time wasn't looking for amazing performance but thought it might be nice to go up an engine size so I went for a test drive in a 1.4 16v with identical spec as my current Polo (ie. wheels, number of doors etc) and it definitely felt slower and I definitley felt liek the 1.2 was quicker over all. As far as I know the 1.2 and 1.4 are identical in the Fabia.

I imagine the difference with the 1.4 would be on long distance or motorway journeys as I find sometimes the 1.2 gets a bit tiring to drive and almost feels like it needs a 6th gear for cruising around 70mph where as I imagine the 1.4 would feel a little more relaxed at the same speeds in 5th.

Overall though I have to say in the 2 years I have owned my Polo I have been impressed with the way the 1.2 engine handles motorway driving and I think for the price difference and performance it is a better buy than the 1.4 .

They do a 75bhp 1.4 16v as well which is what they use in the sport.

I've got one of these for a courtesy car next week :(

When I had my test drive I tried the 1.4 100 and the 1.9TDi. The 1.4 didn't feel as powerful as my current Rover (214si) despite having a similar apparent spec and BHP rating. The TDi felt a lot quicker, especially in the midrange.

I will admit the new 1.2 Sport is alot better than the 1.4 (75bhp) Sport.

I hope you've driven both to reach that conclusion :P

Chris

lol, carefull you.

I was driving around yesterday in a 1.4 16v estate (Ambiente) and i must admit that it didnt feel that much quicker than the 1.2 fabia hatch I had last time as a courtesy car.

I assume the estate was a 100bhp model.

I remember having a 100bhp 1.4 Elegance a couple of years ago as a courtesy car and that seemed nippy at the time when you revved it hard but quite slow compared the the 1.9tdi 100bhp.

Says 16v on the back!

I presume it is the same 1.4 16v that my mother has in her x reg Polo 16v.

It's a very smart car indeed and was billed as a warm hatch at the time, just below the polo GTi.I thought it was a great car with 100 bhp and certainly would wipe the smile off the 1.2.I have had a spin in a 1.2 and it felt marginally quicker than the old 1.4 8v Fabia we had.Nice, but nowhere near the performance of the little polo (and you should see how low profile the tyres are! Look like liquorice)

I would be very surprised if there wasn't a big difference

The 100 bhp 1.4 16v is fairly spritely. The 75 bhp 1.4 16v isnt

All of this is once you have got used to the shall we say 'slow' throttle response.

wasnt the 75bhp for the automatic? or still is i dont understand why they have two versions of the 1.4 a 75 and a 100bhp version to me it seems a little pointless  it isnt slow tho (100bhp) one 0-60 in 11.5 secs where as the 1.2 does it in 16 something maybe the revs make u feel like your going faster

The 1.4 16v only seems fast once you've got it over about 5000rpm. Deceptive though. Can keep up with my vRS quite nicely if I'm not pushing it.

They also do a 75bhp manual car (easy to spot as it has drums on the back)

I certainly did. I drive a 1.4 16v, and I over come the 'slow' throttle response by fast gear shift and keep rev above 2.2-2.3k. IMO, it is not too bad, just very difficult to heel-and-toe thats all.

Must be 75Bhp then... its got drums on back! Cheers lummox. That explains the lack in difference.. only 9Bhp

75bhp modle - drum breaks on rear and black 16v badge...i think this engine used to be badged as the MPI rather than a 16v hence the confusion!,

100bhp modle disc breaks and red 16v badge

The MPI was an old 8v Skoda unit...

Rob.

When did the manual 1.4-16v 75bhp come out? I thought it was only for the Sport, as I'm pretty sure the courtesy car I had was 100bhp :D

oh right.. must have been recently then maybe when they facelifted the fabia
