Fabia 1.2 12v vs 1.4 16v

Featured Replies

Our latest batch of loan cars are 1.4 75bhp Classics and not Sports.

Not sure when they come out though.

i would have thought the 75bhp would have been for the classic as being comfort/ambient higher engine power spec etc etc

How much power are they getting out of the 1.2 lump for the sport?

Its the standard 64bhp 12v variant.

Its the dynamics and the weight of the 1.2 engine that make it feel quicker/livelier/more powerful.

Sport by name only.Too tempt younger buyers with an insurance friendly car with sporty add ons.

And 6-CD, remote CDL and elec windows.

Please dont take offence to my comment, but I drove a 1.2 after I had my vRS remapped and it felt remarkably slow. I did a quick review of it, basically I liked it because it seemed to have a personality and was nippy, but certainly not quick. However I did manage over !00 on a private track.

I hope people aren't reading this thinking it's a tyre shredder, it certainly is SLOW but for a town car/shopping car with motorway use once in while i'm sure it's brilliant

And its ideal for youngsters looking for a cheap to insure 'sporty' looking hatch.

Just wish they had lowered it a touch. Or at least offered an approved spring kit.

They have corrected their marketing strategy for the sport. It is finally priced more competatively against the citroens, renaults and other 1.2 'sports'

Nearly 10k for the watered down 1.4 16v was never going to move any.Just ended up with car mags having a go at it.Far more sensible buy now.Forgot they added electric windows.

Maybe another

I Have a Fabia 1.4 8v, which Is a bit gutless but really smooth, but I Got a 75hp 1.4V3 diesel as a courtesy car, It was really crude and laboured at around 1k revs, wheras my 8v Can go really low and still pull smooth. When revved up, that 1.4 Diesel takes your face off for such a tiny engine, but god is it's turbo is so noisy. Not sure about the Other 1.4's, but mine responded really well to BP Ultimate Fuel.

Yeah please don't get me wrong its no fast car, expecially compared to vRS etc etc. But for a 3cyl 1.2 ud really expect it to be screaming to move, after all fabias not the lightest of things around been built well. I was just supprised by lack of difference moving from a 3cyl to 4cyl 1.4 16v.

I brought for insurace reasons, and i live in town so thats 2 tick boxes for it anyway... but have to say i do alot of motorway miles (200+ every weekend - nothing compared to some of your comutes but still!) and its never strugled.... although im usually asleap by time it reaches speed!

Spot on

I was considering one for SWMBO due to the above and I agree there should be an approved "lowering kit" for the car/all the Fabia range.

I heard very good things about the 1.4 TDi, how does it compare? similar power but a lot more torque should make for brisk overtaking and excellent economy along with a low insurance group, should Skoda have offered the Sport also in this form?

All of this is once you have got used to the shall we say 'slow' throttle response.
Anticipation is the name of the game with the 1.4 :D

When I took mine for a test drive all those years ago, the dealer made a point of telling me to "give it lots of revs"... as long as you keep them relatively high it's great fun to drive, but get stuck in the wrong gear at low revs and it's yawnville :(

Well i am running the "old" 1.4 8v VAG engine my er er er er er VAG motor!!! am running 82.3 bhp and 105.5 lbs torque and i can stomp all over the 1.2 and the 1.4 75bhp units low down torque is far superior and by the time the 1.4 16v is coming into its torque band i am changing gear for the next one and dissapearing fast!!!!!

Ive got the 1.6 version of the 'old' VAG 1.4 unit (75bhp), and it dont pull skin off rice pudding..lol.

However it does feel quicker than the 75 bhp 16v

I used to have the old shape Polo with the 1.4 TDI, which isn't as heavy a car as the Fabia. Goes very well but has quite a narrow power band; fine from about 1750-3000 but struggles at very low revs and get rather asthmatic beyond about 3500. Nice noise, very economical (anything below 50 is very bad news, I managed 69.7 from one tankful). Not sure how badly the Fabia's extra weight would affect it.
