Gear oil change - 6spd box - update

Featured Replies

Hi All

Got the gear oil changed today. Dealer said 2.2 - 2.3 litres. Put in 2.3 litres.

Drain and level plugs 10mm hex.

With the front end jacked up quite high, the oil obviously didn't run out of the filler hole but might if its done on a ramp and the car is level.

Checked how much actually came out and it was just over 2 litres so its got a wee bit extra in. Gave it a run and all seems fine.

The oil that came out was still quite clean as the light shone through it but it was quite dark. The new stuff was much lighter.

This was on a 2010 VRS CR FL with a 6 speed manual gearbox and 50,000 miles on it. It was extremely easy to change and there was plenty of space to get in to the filler plug. I used a large oil syringe (500mm) that did the job fine.

Hope that helps others that want to do it.

Cheers

Dave

Have done this job but was on a Bora 6 speed with well over 100k miles. What was your reason for changing the oil at such a low mileage? I found it made no difference to the operation of my Bora gearbox, and was the most foul smelling stuff I have encountered. I dont think i would bother doing the job again. As far as I am aware the gearbox's generally dont have a service interval? I did it on my Bora as the gearbox was starting to get notchy when cold and I thought it was worth a go. I was lucky enough to do it on a 4 poster and prob slightly easier than jacking trh car up.

We plan on keeping the car for a while (until it dies) so 3 litres of VW gearoil at £8.40 a litre was worth getting. I will change it again at 100,000 miles. I normally overservice my vehicles as labour costs saved by doing it myself make it worthwhile. Have been changing the oil and filter on my astravan every 5000 miles and it still runs sweet. Doing the same with the VRS now.

What oil part no. did you get - I've just done mine on the Scout so it might be different but it was a lot more than than £8.40 per litre.

I used G052 171 A2

I remember it ended in A2. One dealer wanted to ream me for £14.99 + vat a litre.

I called another and it was £8.40 + vat a litre.

Found the part number, it was G052 512 A2.

I thought overfilling was a bad thing. With the mkI the Haynes book of lies was very explicit that the car should level when filling the gearbox back up.

A2 is just the bottle size - 1 litre

The oil for the 5spd is much cheaper so worth double checking what you used.

That was the part number for my chassis number.

I will check it though.

A quick search seems to indicate they are the same grade but 171 is the synthetic version and 512 is the mineral version

Two dealers told me that was the correct oil before I bought it however, I called Skoda UK today to verify. They called me back and said it depends on the date stamped on the bell housing as there are two possiblities. I askked for the dates anbd oil part numbers but they said I need to call back with the date which should be on the bottom of the bell housing.

Looks like the bottom engine cover off again at the weekend then.

Anyone know exactly where the datestamp is??

Mine is sitting with the covers off - will have a look and let you know.

Great stuff. Cheers. It will give me a head start.

Had a look - even gave it a clean but couldn't see anything apart from the number cast into the casing.

Did they say where it was likely to be stamped ?

They said it was on the bottom of the bell housing.

Where was the number cast into the casing - maybe that would do?

Its strange that two dealers told me the same part number but SUK couldnt tell me without a date stamped on the bottom of the gearbox.

I will hopefully have timne at the weekend to check mine out and hopefully the dealers gave me the correct oil.

Number cast was in the centre casting I think, on the bottom. Can't be missed

you'll find it 's stamped with small dots   I've had the same conversation!!!!!    whilst the skoda UK guys are very helpful I can't see the average stealer going to mutch trouble to verify--- from now on I use Fuchs  who DO know what they're talking about but it's easier to get it from OPIE

I got the number off this eveninng. Looks like a Nov 07 gearbox.

I will speak to SUK on Monday to see what they say.

It turtns out two dealets gave me the wrong part number for the oil.

I have to call the dealer tomorrow with the invoice number so they can look into the problem. The VRS is now off the road until I get the right oil in it.

It should be 2 litres of the G052 171 A2.

This is the oil that was used to change my Gearbox oil on my Scout.

G  052171A2    = 3 Litres x 25.06 Euro per Litre.

About 2,4 Litres went in.

Called dealer today with invoice number. Called them back later to be asked the date code off the gearbox. Pity they didn't ask that in the first place.

Anyhoo, gave them the date code so will see what comes back. Car still off road and if don't get right oil this weekend then its off the road until next weekend. Not best pleased so far.

Got a call from the dealer this morning. They admitted their mistake and hav 3 lites of the correct oil for me to pick up.

No extra charge.

They did state that the oil thats in would be fine to use and wouldnt cause any issues but I will put the correct stuff in for peace of mind.

Thats worked out well - a FREE flush   and saved £60.

I will hopefully drain the oil and replace it over the weekend.

I still have the original oil bottles which I will refill with the oil I take out. Its only done about 20 miles so if its any good to anyone in the local area, they can have it foc.

If someone can use it, all the better. Any takers?

Part no. Is G052 512 A2.
