Failing power steering pump

Featured Replies

Over the past few months the steering has been intermittent on my vrs.

Car was in for a service today and was diagnosed with the pump on the way out.

It has been scanned for faults and nothing has came up.

So before I shell out on a new pump I'm looking for a second opinion ?

So far the angle sensor has been replaced, fluid checked and topped up (not that it was particularly low) and the battery/alternator have both been checked and are fine.

The pump itself doesn't have any weird noises, sometimes it works fine on normal trips and others it just goes dead when turning etc, there's no warning lights come on the dash when it goes dead.

Does this sound like the pump ?

Any help appreciated :)

If u need a pump give me a pm m8 ;).. got one off a 2004 vrs im breaking + it will be considerably cheaper than a new one

I'll give it a check but pretty sure it was fine when I had the battery out the other day when I topped the fluid up

Check the fuse links on top of the battery before you buy a pump. They sometimes develop hairline cracks causing an intermittent connection. I think the PAS one is 40 amp.

I'll take at look at them thanks

Battery earth checked and it's fine, not loose or damaged.

Checked all the fuses on the battery and no signs of cracks or damage.

Today on the way to work the light was flickering for a few mins then pump completely failed putting the light on the dash, after 10mins or so it kicked back into life.

Looks like it's going to be a new pump :(

Might look OK, after driving, feel both ends of the earth strap where they connect, if either is hot then it's a bad connection.

It still sounds like a bad connection somewhere along the wiring.

Thanks for the advice, will try that later.

May even whip the bumper off and check the wiring to the pump.

Are you sure its the pump and not sensor? Seen on here people replacing pumps with no joy
