Anyone with vrs tsi engine changed their timing chain tensioner?

Featured Replies

With all of the talk of these engines failing has anyone updated their chain tensioner to the new part which is meant to be better as the ratchet system has been re designed (apparently) to this part - 06K109467K

I am thinking about it but wonder whether I am being a bit over the top about the engine failure rates.

The tensioner has been revised 3 times since the original one so VW should have got the problems sorted with it failing If you do get it changed, you might like to consider having a new chain fitted since that was revised late last year.

And yes, I think at least one of our members has had the tensioner replaced with the latest revision as a precaution.

Thanks do you have the latest part numbers please?

Having said that the timing chain had been revised, that only apples to 2008 models so I have revised my post above.  The revised chain tensioner - 06K 109 467K - was introduced wef 05.03.2012 and supercedes the 3 previous versions.  If and when I have the tensioner replaced, I will opt to replace the timing chain too.

As I haven't seen this posted elsewhere on Briskoda, here are the various timing chain part numbers and revision dates for the CDAA, CCZA and CDAB engines.*

06H 109 467N >> 26.04.2010

06H 109 467T      27.04.2010 >> 29.08.2011

06H 109 467AB    30.08.2011 >> 04.03.2012

06K 109  467K     05.03.2012 >>

All of the tensioners other than the 467K version have been dropped and must not be used as spare (replacement) parts.

CDAA = 118KW 160HP 1.8TSI

CDAB = 112KW 150HP 1.8TSI

CCZA = 147KW 200HP 2.0TSI

I have seen the old and new ones side by side and the 4th addition you mention does look a better design

Don't suppose you know the price for Buying/fitting?

I have just got two VAT-inclusive prices from TPS.

06K 109 467K (the tensioner) is £38.40.

And notwithstanding what I said above about the timing chain, the part number is now 06H 109 158AA and the price £59.05.

That's helpful thanks. How many hours to do tensioner do you think. Is tps trade only?

Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. I've had quite a few bits from them with a friend of a friend who works there. Can't hurt to ring them.

Thanks, but I could never fit this myself and I guess a dealer would want to buy it. My concern is the labour time. But then until yesterday I was expecting 450 for the cambelt and water pump.

Is replacing the tensioner in a similar place to water pump or not worth thinking about water pump?

1.8 Tsi 58 reg with 92,000 miles on  mine...

why have it changed?

As I am out of warranty. Just had a new clutch and fly wheel as release bearing went and only 36k in clock so a bit paranoid about my car being one that Sod's law will have a problem. Just trying to have peace of mind as I am abroad for a couple of years and don't want to be completely stuffed out in Belgium with no Skoda uk out here;)

I had the tensioner, chain and guides replaced when I purchased mine. I contributed 300 and the garage paid the rest. They said the 'cost' for them to do it was 500. I presume if you went into your local dealer the retail price would be a lot more.

Just out of interest what happened with the release bearing? I think I may have a similar problem with mine.

It made an awful creaking groaning noise when I pulled away. Worse when cold and in reverse awful up an incline. 1 dealer told me it was the brakes hmmm muppet. It only took 3 hours to do flywheel, clutch, plate and bearing which I was very impressed with. Could have just done the bearing but seemed stupid not to go the whole lot.

Mines been to dealer and they diagnosed it as been the rear brakes. No chance it is. My warranty has just run out as well. Symptoms sound the same as mine.

How much did it cost to replace?

I am in Belgium for a couple of years so I bought clutch kit with all in for 450 quid from sachs dealer same brand vw use and paid 350 euros to a Skoda dealer here to fit. Uk dealer just for parts quoted 700 pounds plus 4 to 6 hours labour. If you just replace the bearing then the part cost is very cheap I think roughly 40 pounds. But still same labour.

Might be time to extend my warranty!!

Check small print as some times clutch parts are not covered due to wear and tear.

This week, when in for a service, I was dealer quoted £624 for 'both' tensioners and chains. Also recommended not to do it as, in worse case scenario, 'goodwill' would help a lot, with my car bought from and serviced by the dealer from new. Took a look at a mk3 vrs while I was there..........

For the chain what she is yours as I understood the chains were not the issue just the one tensioner. But I guess if doing 1 tensioner you may as well do all of it.
