Moving to UK, who can insure me for a reasonable price?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm going to be moving to Cambridgeshire for work in the next few months.

I'm 23 and I have a mk1 Octavia RS at the minute, I've had it for 2 years and have had my licence for 6 years.

No claims or anything dodgy at all ever. I have only 2 years NCB in my own name and 3 years named driving before that.

I was pretty surprised to read the smallprint on Greenlight's website saying that you had to be a UK resident for the last 3 years.

Has anyone got any experience with this move or any advice?

Any help would be appreciated!

Michael

Where do you currently live?

If your current insurance is valid outside Ireland, just keep it. Why fix something that isn't broken? Nobody is going to bat an eye at a Irish plated car in the UK, as long as everything is above board.

EDIT: Read that as "for a few months" for some reason. My post still stands, but if you're moving permanently, it might be more of a grey area.

Email or call Direct line or Aviva or one of the big insurers for their policy?

If England isn't going to be your permanent address there's no problem .

Thanks, for your input everyone.

Sorry, I'm from Ireland.

Yeah, it will be a permanent address (well over a year anyway).

Aviva Ireland are saying they'll give me a few weeks grace but no more.

The thing is, I will be back and forth a little bit on the ferry so I might get away without doing anything with some insurers.

Compare the market mate. Im currently with hastings but was kwik fit

You could also try gocompare.com. When I was renewing our insurance I noticed many asked what type of licence you had too, so that may or may not play a part. I also know that in some cases you are only allowed to drive in the uk for a fixed amount of time before you have to get a full uk licence, though that may not apply to Ireland it's worth double checking so you know the criac

Hmm, I was hoping that the comparison sites were well off the mark.

Used gocompare and the cheapest came back at a little under £2000 ....

Does the address make a massive difference in England? Here it only means + - €20 depending on the area.

Liverpool Victoria are pretty competitive and have won awards for customer service. Give them a try too. Definately best to email or get on blower rather than price comparison sites if you  are coming from Ireland.

It'll be your age and car combination.

You'll need to try one of the site sponsors, but I doubt you'll get prices you're getting now.

The trouble you might have is trying to insure a car on southern Irish plates rather than a UK registered plates especially if you are coming to permanent residence in the UK. You need to actually try to speak to someone, rather than try a online comparison site and explain the situation regarding work. Is it definitely a year you are only coming to the UK to work or will you decide to stay on? I'm from Tyrone originally and I have a cousin who came over to work on the farms around the Cambridgeshire/norfolk areas for the summer. 7 years later he still there. You may have to have your car registered in the UK rather than southern Ireland,if you are staying over a certain length of time in the UK. Have you tried the Ulster farmers union for an insurance quote . Alot of the English blokes working with my cousin use them,as my cousin is with them and find them very competitive especially if working on seasonal jobs in the farming industry,so policies are more tailored to that line of work
