RPM Counter (tachometer) input signal

Featured Replies

If you have money to buy the steering column with EPS from a car scrapyard, the rest is peanuts. Personally I find more complicated to fit it mechanically. The electronics is cheap too and I can walk you step by step to build it.

Thanks Ricardo for your continued support, Sure I would seize the opportunity to benefit from your valuable experience while assembling these components together.

I would like to ask for your opinion about using the approach described in this post as an alternative to fitting ABS sensor and ring, Do you think it can reliably serve the same function to provide the speed signal ?

Yeah, I know all abour TC-6 onboard computer and associated sensors. For the purpose of computing the vehicle speed and displaying it for the driver, the solution works fine. Although I think I might have a better one that could get rid of that annoying speedo cable. I'm talking about removing the cable and mounting a custom gear and a Hall sensor on top of the speedo drive. The frequency of the signal from the sensor would then be converted to voltage and amplified to feed a DC motor mounted to the back of existing speedometer.

Now, back to your question. While the solution to feed VSS to TC-6 is good, it is not good enough for EPAS. EPAS needs a signal of much higher frequency to operate correctly. This is when an ABS notched disk (25 - 100 notches depending on manufacturer) comes into play. ABS computer needs that kind of signal to detect accurately low speeds of the vehicle.

Amplifying the input VSS signal to the required frequency .... Can this be done using some circuit ?

You mean multiply the frequency perhaps. Yeah, it can be done but don't expect having continuous control over multiplication factor. My advice is to stay on ABS notched disk + ABS sensor + signal converter 'relay'. Don't be picky, it is the cheapest solution. If you can afford buying the EPAS, the rest is peanuts.

Believe me It's not about being picky at all, the problem is I couldn't source the ABS sensor and relay till now, So I was hoping to find an alternative.

Unfortunately here we don't have this concept of breaker yard, Only used parts dealers and you can't just take your own tools and go grab whatever your need from any car. It's only what they avail for you and with the price they want. For the relay only these guys want to sell me the whole fuse box, and the ABS sensor has to go with the whole wheel hub $$$$ .... pretty amazing !!!!!

If you live here you will be amazed of how hard it's to source very simple or basic parts, which you see people in other places buy easily over the internet and have it delivered to their door step, Considering that you have been lucky enough to find it available at the first place.

I do respect your advice, trying hard to follow it literally, but sometimes I find myself constrained with the available resources.

Amazing... I didn't expect such trade habits in Egypt, Cairo in 21st century... What you're describing sounds more like blackmail. Do I smell some trade habits from a neighbouring country or is it 100% local?

So how much would cost you a second hand EPAS then? What year, car?

In my country, much smaller and certainly with less history, things are smoother. We have all kinds of scrapyards (this is the closest translation) and the sellers wouldn't even dare doing such 'trade' unless they want to never have customers and have their a$$ kicked too :) In fact we have laws against such hucksters.

Anyway, in that case, I will try figure out something.

I am not sure about neighboring countries, But It has been always the same here for many years  :) almost everything is overpriced comparing to what you can find abroad.

I have been lucky with this one, because no one here wants to buy an EPAS column as it's known to be a problematic, Corsa owners used to change it with the hydraulic version once they face a problem with it, So I can get it for 100$ USD (Opel Corsa B, 1999).

Lucky you, what about the immigration laws over there, any opportunity ?

Hi everybody!

Me too I have EPS problem whith my hyundai i10 2008. The Rpm gauge and the EPS aren't work. I bought a new ECU from hyundai and it always doesn't work.

Can someone help me please, what I need to check to solve this problem. I've already check the motor, sensor alimentation, all is OK.

I checked too the ECU but the software didn't find THE EPS.

What should I do! Thank you!
