DSG Changes

Featured Replies

(Apologies if there is a thread for this elsewhere - but I can't find one)

New Oct 1.4 TSi DSG Estate collected this weekend ( :) ).  A question for those with experience of driving this engine: Roughly, when do the gears change (assuming gradual acceleration on the flat)?

I've only driven the car home (13miles) (since when it's been having my PDI and Prep), but it seemed as if 6th gear was engaged by the time I had hit 40mph.  Which was not what I expected.  I should explain that (i) this is my first experience of DSG and (ii) the Octy's predecessor had a 5-speed torque converter box which would change at multiples of 10mph (under the same conditions).  So I rather expected DSG #6 to engage round about 60mph . . .  The box, of course, is so subtle, the only way I could tell which gear was engaged was by the MaxiDot reading.

Gear is based on engine load, mode selected and a few other things.

To make a comparrison, normal mode in a 2.0 TDI DSG if I am on the flat or a slight decline the gearbox will be in 5th at 30mph.  Gearbox is very quick to change if speed drops or acceleration required.

Perfectly normal to be in 6th at that speed.

Two other DSG7 petrols (Scirocco 1.4 and Fabia vRS - different final drive gearing though) and based on those you'll be in 7th well before 50mph on a gentle take off, but does depend on load, incline etc as already noted.  It changes that quick, 1st lasts barely a second on a start from standstill, the rest following behind pretty quick.  It'll do a change about every 1-1.5 seconds going up the box unless you hit the boards.

Thanks, everybody, for your rapid responses.  It's the re-assurance that I was looking for.

Iain, sounds about right, into 7th (top) at 50mph if going nice'n'steady, hold her on the floorboards though and its 6k before she changes whilst acting like a scalded cat.

I've got the hatchback version and I also collected Saturday afternoon.

My Octy 2 with DSG changed up into 7th much sooner than my new Octy, which holds 6th until about 1700 rpm. I am sure it's all to do with economy as I am averaging 50mpg compared with 45 with previous car. You tend not to notice the changes which are very smooth. A matter of opinion I know but would be most reluctant to return to a manual box.

Never going back to manual, I test drove the 6sp. man. diesel 2.0 then got straight into a 1.4 TSI DSG, took about 400 yards ok maybe 800 and I knew, my left foot's redundant. You get £225 saving over three years on road tax about another £600 extra residual value, its a no brainer really and a fantastic drive.

Slightly off topic, but the sales lady who took me on the test drive before I bought my 1st Octy asked if I had driven a DSG before - the reason was the female who test drove the car before me decided to brake sharply on the motorway, but forgot she was driving a DSG. The result was a 360 spin with the engine revving it's nuts off. Both needed a change of underwear & were fortunate no other vehicles following.

Hmmm.. The other reason I brought a DSG is wife insists she can't drive an automatic !

Nuff said

Did note see it here but eco mode will change up quickly to keep you in the highest gear possable so keeps revs down but sports mode max's revs so changes up latter in eash gear.

When you have done your running in have fun with tapping the auto gear stick back one into sports mode and if you the tap it back again you return to eco.

Colin.
