Time to think about a new car. (and van)

Porsches are common these days - you see them all-over

Don't think they'd stand out anymore than a Z4/S2000 etc

go for it - you only live once

True. But not in my road they're not. I'd have the only one

and be marking myself out and I have nowhere to lock it away

if it does catch the wrong set of eyes.

The daft thing is the S3 is more valuable than what I've been

looking at but nobody even notices it.

Buy a 911 and whether you mean to or not you are making a statement

by choosing such a car.  And if I'm honest, a Boxster would be okay but I

can't be doing with a soft top so that's out and Caymans are too new although

I'd rather have one of those than a 911 if I'm being completely honest, I prefer

the overall size of them. .

And while I completely agree with the 2nd part of this post.

If I caught any of the local youths even looking at it funny I'd have a

spaz of biblical proportions. I can do without the stress and worry.

How about a BBR Turbo'd MX5?

That would be fun!

Gary, I used to have a bright yellow GT-R on the drive...

One side of me is a silver Ford Focus and the other side have a white Mini.

Care not what other people think, care what you want and think of the fun! :)

On the topic of the Audi, it blends in.

Most people out there can't tell the difference between an S3, S line or 1.6tdi.

Personally I think the Porsche isn't that showy, especially if you get it in a sensible colour.

Speaking from a law enforcement background, you don't get many Porsche 911's stolen from people's drives (at least not oop north). The reasons being that a stolen 911 would stand out too much as there aren't that many about, and they would be harder to sell on as the market is smaller.

I'd be far more concerned about having any Audi S Line, Golf Gti or Range Rover sport on my drive.

E46 m3 SMG??

E46 m3 SMG??

I've always liked those, had a look at what was about and showed

a couple to Mrs G who immediately vetoed it on account of it

looking like a drug dealers car. Especially as I'd be interested in a

black example... Init...

I've got to get my money together first anyway,

get the Audi sold, and then there's a van to find so I can carry on working

while I also sell the kangoo on. Mot on that is due in June so that's when I'll

be looking to sell that while its still worth a grand or so.

Add into that the whole getting up and running on two wheels this year

and I reckon its going to be Autumn before I've got my bike, car, and van

all sorted out.....   What a year though eh?

Got my theory test booked up for the 25th of the month

then CBT to arrange.

More expensive cars are not stolen as frequently! The modern security systems fitted are very good too! But the main thing is (using Richards old gtr as an example) if a more prolific car which will stand out such as a GTR in bright yellow it would be harder to escape unseen than a 1.2 fabia for example!

Good old Briskoda, egging me on to get 911'd up.

It still may happen in a moment of madness but am definitely looking at

other things too. There's no mad rush but no harm in looking around.

I really have considered a lot of things so far.

Well, I've decided what van I'm after anyway....

That's something I suppose but it will be costing the

whole 5k I had in mind... It sure is a lot quicker choosing a van

than a car, I was really surprised at how much van 5k buys actually.

But for 5k (+vat) I can get a 60, 61, or 11 plate van with a third of the

miles and wear the one I already have has got.

So it will almost certainly be a Citroen Berlingo with the third seat

(what clinched it for me was the 3rd seat actually most vans that size only have

the two seats) and the 1.6 HDI engine.

Well at least thats sorted then huh.

And I'm 99% certain on what bike I'm after too so it's just deciding what car....

I'll be putting the Audi up for sale in a couple of weeks after my trip down to

London later in the month for my mates 50th birthday do.

It looks smashing, has just had a major service and cambelt and waterpump.

And also has a fresh MOT. It's rolling on four matching Michelin PS3s that are just 800

miles old and had the front pads changed at the same time as the tyres.

Hopefully it won't hang around for long, Autotrader reckons I should be asking

£15,425 for a private sale. We shall see....

Good choice on the Berlingo, we have 5x Peugeot Partner's (3x '10' plates, 2x '12' plates) with the same 1.6HDi engine, the '10' plate ones have between 114k and 135k miles (all driven hard due to stop-start nature, none (to my knowledge) have had DPF/turbo issues)

Oh no the berlingo.

That 3rd seat isn't really a seat unless you are a sardine.

Don't know why but the rear tyres wear in twice the time as the fronts and the handling / road holding is pretty bad.

The older berlingo is nicer to drive. Im the only one at my company with the older berlingo and although i have the sluggish 1.9 flat diesel i can still walk after i've arrived on the job :)

How about.

A decent van. You do nearly all of your business in the vehicle so it stands to reason that it takes the lion's share of the budget. Something modern, capacious and will last a lifetime.

But if you're struggling with the sterile feeling of the S3, why not divert a trifling amount of money towards

You won't feel more alive than flat out in that. Those 335/330s will feel like riding Pinocchio in comparison

I don't care if it's slow or unwieldy, just so long as it's very

very clean, reliable and spacious enough for my day to day

requirements.  Being able to transport a motorcycle is probably just as

easy on a small trailer, I'd be getting a tow bar fitted to it that's for sure.

Other wise with a roof rack, this will do me size wise.

The third seat is ideal because I often do stuff with my wifes younger brothers

(Karting, climbing, video games sessions, air rifle shooting to name a few)

and I'd use the van to ferry them around if I could get them both in it.

This should do the trick, There's room for them in there, ones only 11 and ones 14

neither are big kids either.  Work wise I nearly always work alone, and the rest of the time

it's just the wife sat next to me and she's hardly what you'd call big either.

Pretty much ANYTHING is better than my old Kangoo.

It has just about served its purpose with me but now I need

something a little newer not least because I like to try and create a

good impression when I pull up at a job and a nice clean van goes a long way

to achieve that. Oh and I lost my undertray the other week going through a

flooded road which was a pain. It's all held together with cable ties

under there at the moment. :P

The other thing the newer Berlingo does which also impressed me

was how you can fold the front seat flat for the extra load length.

That's something I would find very useful doing the sort of work I do.

And the running costs should be the same as the Kangoo with regard to fuel.

Most of my work is within a 20 mile radius. But I will have some work in London

coming up soon as my sister is buying a new house and she's on my ear to

go and fix the place up for her a bit. And there's also more work at my mums now she's

back at hers after the fire. So reliability is important as they both live over 150 miles

away from me.

Where's the third seat in it?!

Its more of a 2 1/2 seater

Driver gets a proper seat

Then the passenger side is like a bench seat with 2 seatbelts.

May be fine for teenagers but if your carrying 3 workmen you certainly don't want to be travelling any great distance. Probably best bet would be a 1 legged labourer as the middle seat passenger can't really have a leg as the centre console / gearbox takes the legs space

In the middle, hang on I'll find a pic.

It is only small and a big lad like you might not fit in it Matt

but the younger bruvs will, and mrs G likes to curl up her feet

when she's in the van and I'm hoping this will keep her feet off my ruddy dash

and out of my ruddy mirrors.

This particular van has really caught my eye actually. It looks spot on from the pics

http://vans.autotrader.co.uk/used-vans/citroen/berlingo/2010-citroen-berlingo-625lx-75-3-seats-diesel-bury-st-edmunds-vfpa-8aa782603dd8f3f3013deb1f38dc5d04/makemodel/make/citroen/model/berlingo/price/4000/4999

If it's still there when I'm ready to buy I may very well have this one.

There's a pic in the description Matt

The Bingo came in a crew van form too

The mk.2 Bingo's are very similar to the car version

^^^ Not enough load length for me,

I would want a van with no bulkhead

Just got a text from my best mate after asking his opinion

and as he's heard me banging on for over 20 years about how much

I love the 911 he instantly said I should go for it too.

Think I need to arrange a test drive of one.
