lost half of my brake lights

Featured Replies

Hi guys

It's come to my attention that I have brake lights out. Drivers side has gone as has only half the led rail on top of boot glass, at first, I thought maybe it was just a bulb in the tail cluster, but it appears not. A bloke I work with had suggested I might have 2 fuses for tail end like on his volvo, that's not the case either.

Any ideas please chaps? Before I break out the voltmeter and haynes wiring diagram.

Mk1 or MK2, if its a MK1 even the central brake light is standard bulbs IIRC. it will just be blown bulbs that need replacement.

Mk 1 is just little standard bulbs, which have probably given up on life. you can get LED replacements, couple of threads about potential current leak with them, but seems o be potluck whether you'll suffer from it.

Cheers guys.

The tail cluster brake light is not a case of blown bulb, i have tried new bulbs in the bulb holder and they still dont work.

This has recently come to my attension also. I have half the high level brake light out and the same side stop light doesnt work.

However ive ordered new bulbs anyway just assumed they had blown at same time. Waiting on new bulbs to confirm a fault or not.

Some of the MK4 Golfs did funny things with the centre stop if one of the side ones were not working. Start with checking all the brake lights first.

Quick update, my top rail is of the led variety, so a new unit needed there then. Not had a chance to look at bulb holder in tail cluster yet, will start with volt meter just in case all the bulbs i was using were faulty also.

Take it you have an estate then?

Ok, so, apart from a dealer, does anyone know a decent (price) place I can get a new led rail?

Try EuroCarParts / ebay

Or you could check out the parts for sale section on here.

Hi guys. All sorted now, spent an hour in the boot yesterday with a flat blade screwdriver and a multimeter, and got both clusters working, and a high level brake light from the breakers for a fiver. Problem solved.
