Gunk or Swarfega or something else - degreasers.

Featured Replies

Having done a disc and pad change on our second car (MK2 Mondeo - can't get rid of it), I used 2 different degreasers during the disassemly/assembly process and was totally underwhelmed by both.

The reason I used them, was because the "old girl" just flew through the MOT, with just a CV gaitor needing replacement. The old gaitor had split, and there was grease splattered over the inside of the wheel, the caliper, pads and disc (which was knackered), so I had to do a thorough cleaning session before fitting the new parts.

Back in the day, I used to use Gunk from a big tin, which stank like a skunk but worked. These latest creations seem to be useless, a bit like comparing 2 pack paints (which could withstand an RPG attack) to the modern "eco friendly" water based rubbish.

So guys and gals which is the best degreaser?

Given the application, Gunk.

I find gunk leaves a residue. I use brake and clutch cleaning fluid in a spray bottle for everything, instantly breaks down the grease/oil and it magically dissapears. you obviously need to wipe the excess grease up first.

Brake cleaner or carb cleaner will do the job.

Diesel is a very effective (and cheap) solvent for grease. I use it to clean the chain on the motorbike and it works a treat.

Once the worst is removed with Gunk, do a final clean with a cheap version of Lynx deodorant spray. This will remove all last traces of any greasy residue.

Also works well to remove sticky labels and glue residue.

is there any particular scent which works best Mike, and is there a chance that I may be surrounded by hordes of young women, thus causing me to lose interest in the cleaning process? :giggle:
