Bought a vrs got a couple of problems

Featured Replies

Hey all

Bought a vrs yesterday and iv got a few issues. the right hand mirror doesnt adjust using the little button/stick, the door doesn't lock on the fob but works on the key and locks every door. also the light on the door card doesn't work. Could these all be linked?

Iv got steering wobble at around 70 so guessing could be tracking and iv also got rumble in the break pedal from the front. Iv noticed the disk on the n/s has surface rust on it so maybe the pads arnt touching the whole disk? or could be warped? And i think the rear break is sticking i can hear it at low speeds and it smells when stopped. The rear disk and pads were changed around 5k before i bought it so guessing handbrake could be stuck on slightly?

Apart from that touch wood it seems ok lol!

Arron

All common issues.

The door/mirror issue is likely to be the control unit inside the door itself. Its either wet inside or the pins are broke.. Most likely both.

Calipers have a habit of seizing/sticking as they age

As above control unit.

Had one of my rear calipers changed @ 110K, sticky piston.

Vibration is from warped disks, I have a slight vibration as disks have had a good 60K put on them.

Hello buddy welcome to briskoda. Buying second hand cars is always risky and usually gives the new owner some jobs to do. All the faults you've mentioned are fairly easy and cheap to fix and the good thing with the Octavia is it'll save you on labour costs as you can do them yourself. The mirror could be either a faulty switch, motor in the mirror not working or simply a fuse blown. Your key fob may just need reprogrammed. This is also fairly easy to do. Just look on YouTube loads of videos on there. Does the red light flash when you press the button? If it doesn't it might just need a new battery. The micro switch in the drivers door is very common fail. There is a how to fix guide at the top of the octy page. I've had both rear calipers seize on mine before 100k miles. Have a look on eBay I'm sure I seen two for sale recently. The steering wobble isn't so easy to nail. That could be worn bushes, ball joints, or like you've mentioned wheel alignment. Despite the problems on your car though, IMHO you've made a good choice. The Octavia is a very tough car. Enjoy!

I would have thought if it was warped discs he would only get the judder under braking? He just mentioned it was around 70.

Good call, I read it wrong so could be balancing or bits mentioned above.

Thanks for all the replys. I could only notice the judder from higher speeds guessing its more noticeable at speed. Iv felt the rear wheels n there not hot so must be only slightly stuck. Maybe a cleanup is all it needs? When I got the car the handbrake was left off. Dunno if its been used 4 a while so could need a cleanup and some use? As for the mirror ill check the fuse 1st but its not a urgent 1. Ill have to check the fob. It opens them all other than the drivers.

IM a ok mechanic so will do most of it all myself. Just found from experience forums are always helpful :)

Looking through advisories from mot iv gotta check for oil leak on gearbox. Doesnt say if its from the gearbox tho. Rear damper covers split and slight sill damage both sides.

In the process of moving house so gotta do the main things first lol. Cheers for the info so far.

I would also suspect door control unit or loom to it for your electrical problems, have just sorted mine with exact same symptoms.

All the same problems? Including the locking?

The door control gives every symptom you have when something is a miss

Welcome to Brisky, as has been said, all common problems. I actually have all those problems on my car currently, the water was getting into the wiring for the door motor, a spray of silicone can really help that but I opted for a clear plastic cover over the motor to deflect the water away and a latex glove tied round the wiring connector to insulate it (yes really)!  The sticking heating heating brakes can sometimes be cured by cleaning up the carriages or may need a refurb kit. Warped discs aren't too expensive to replace, tracking/ balancing didn't cure my wobble at 70ish. Only going back in time and not jumping it 40 feet off a hump back bridge :o  would cure that for me, but hopefully that won't be the case for you! ;)

Iv got steering wobble at around 70 so guessing could be tracking and iv also got rumble in the break pedal from the front.

Yup. Mine had brake judder from 70ish as well as a bit of wobble when I got it. Tyres were also low so got fresh front boots and balancing/tracking/alignment and now smooth and assured braking with no judder/wobble.

Would point out that warped discs are epically, awesomely rare and if they do look warped it's generally due to a bit of pad transfer that can be sorted with a good cleanup.

That sounds reassuring :) iv had warped discs before and found it to just be worse at higher speed. Defo one of my pads is not fully touching the discs. When I get round to moving iv got a garage and a pit so its all good lol. Ill jack her up and have all the brakes off ect. Cheers for the info everyone.
