Be careful when you wash your combi

Featured Replies

Well just a quick word of warning if you're cleaning your combi.

I have mine a decent detail/clean yesterday and used 3M tape over the roof bar end so I didn't mark them with polish. I thought the tape had left residue behind when I removed it but it seems it was paint on the textured part that meets the roof! And I've just taken more of it off trying to remove what I thought was glue!!!

Annoyed is not the word.

Yes that part is painted textured plastic.

Still shouldn't come off so easily!!!! I only used a citrus based cleaner and a microfibre cloth!

Another trip to the dealer for me then to see what can be done

Just touch it up or buy a can of satin black mask up around and it spray it..... Or just buy a new piece, it'll probably come painted anyway.

New piece sounds the best option as i'll never get the same colour/finish- any idea if the unclip or does the bar need to be unscrewed from inside?

I can't believe it's not made of black plastic, that's crazy!

It was 3m blue masking tape that did that? Never had it leave residue or pull anything off before  :wonder:

:( pants

Just to let you know when I got mine I taped it here to machine polish and it came off ok.  maybe theyve changed the paint process since then but agree it would be better in black plastic rather than painted :(

Yep. Blue 3M automotive tape. Not a mark on the other 3 pieces. Not a happy bunny especially as the bonnet has a dent too.

I think my skoda ownership is destined to be cursed.

Sorry to read your thread Mike.

After what you have been through with car no.1

Cheers Keith.

I think I'm going to pretend the car is made from matchsticks from now on and therefore I need to be really really really really really careful.

Pass me the bubble wrap someone. Ta.

I work in the automotive paint industry using robots to paint plastics so I know what's what with paint on cars so I treat mine like it's made of the most delicate substance know to man!

That's really annoying..

Damage through love, care and attention always hurts the most!

So does anyone know if the plastic piece of carp will unclip easily or is it a roof bars off job?

Shocking quality bad luck :(

The quality looks like plastidip. You could buy a can of this and spray a few coats. I did this on wing mirrors before and it's quite durable and it peels off if you change your mind.

If you don't mind me asking, how did the bonnet get dented?

Interested in your bonnet dent too as I've noticed one in mine today on the crease / hump!

Surely that's just wrong?  These are not cheap cars, I'd be amazed and disgusted if the dealer didn't sort that out for you. They wouldn't need to know about the tape would they? :giggle:

The tape shouldn't take the paint off anyway, it's designed to go on trim and come off without damaging. The fact I managed to rub more paint off before I realised it wasn't rouge polish is more concerning! It doesn't exactly look good for the longevity of those pieces at least.

Well the visit to the dealers didn't go quite as well as I'd hoped.

They agreed it shouldn't have happened but as there's been tape and then cleaner there might be a chance Skoda wouldn't change it under warranty.

The part comes attached to the roof bars so that's £200 plus fitting. So long as the headlining doesn't get creased when the bar is changed.

Only suggestion for now is to fit the part, charge me and for them to out a claim in and reimburse me if it's honoured.

I'm going to give Skoda a call later when I get home and start things from their end. No way this should happen and it's only happened to one of them so it was be substandard. This is going to be a pain in the proverbial!

yeah gutted for you mate, im sorry but no way let Skoda off with this, if you can simply rub away the paint then its faulty.

the car is new under warranty and mant to be built to last longer than a few days or a few rubs with a soft cloth :(

Well I've rang Skoda and the nice woman on the phone typed lots but I don't think understood much of what I said!

Waiting for a case/claims manager to call me back on 2-3 days. I did make sure she noted that this is the 2nd car I've had from them that has turned up with paint faults and this one also has bits that haven't been painted on the calipers and now the paint is rubbing off the roof bars!!

I think she got I wasn't too impressed - especially when she asked if this was my first Skoda (bar the one that was swapped) and I replied "yes and probably my last!"

Well I got my call back from customer services.

And the price of my honesty? No claim being authorised.

Apparently the important part (read as "get out of jail free") for Skoda is that I used "non-approved" products. So all of you that don't use Autoglym on your car and have problems with the paint/bodywork down the line,  you won't be able to claim through the warranty! What a load of  :swear:

Anyway, they did say I was to send them any info on the stuff I used and they would look at it as I had problems with my first car and they are aware there was a paint flaw in this car too.

I don't hold out much hope but just getting some info together to send to them once I've calm down a bit.

To be honest, I'd rather not have the headliner dropped as there's a fair chance of it creasing and then thats a whole big mess to replace.

On the plus side I emailed Dodo Juice looking for the data sheet on the Tarmalade product I'd used and got an email straight back asking me to call them (I'd mentioned why I needed the data sheet).

30 minutes later my phone signal cut off but it'd been a fruitful, interesting and educational chat with Dom at Dodo Juice.

Anyway, the gist of the complaint is that the 3M masking tape removed paint where it shouldn't and therefore it must be substandard. Nevermind what was or was not applied to the paint after.

We'll see how it goes but Dom did suggest a smart repair rather than changing the roof bars - it'd keep the headliner intact anyway! I wonder if Skoda would pay for that rather than rip the car to bits, if indeed they accept the claim.

Time for a chilled beer and some quiet contemplation (of what my next car will be!!)   :notme:

smart repair then give skoda the big two fingers.  Cant believe theyve washed their hands of paint falling off with masking tape.  What a bunch of twonks :(
