the answer is 768mb..... :D

depends what speed you want......only guessing but we're talking ddr stuff that clock in at 266mhz or higher?

(cos i'm using old-tech 133mhz stuff on my Athlon to run it at full tilt of 1.4ghz....)

You could try

www.aria.co.uk - i tend to buy most of my hardware from there' date=' because they're cheap, and I can bunk off work to go and save myself postage.

Never had any problems with ebuyer either, though not everyone shares that experience.

How about [url']www.kustompcs.co.uk?[/url] Ok, they're all the way up in scotland, but the stuff is good and the service and contact is outstanding.

Dunno what they're prices are like at the moment........bear in mind, they'r not a bulk organisation like ebuyer, so prices might be a tad higher.....

just a few idea to get you started.

probably DDR

probably 277

you need to check what your board is though really

Think I might open up the tower and see what chip the 256mb is, and copy it. :o Just need to find a moment to turn it off then. :)

When yr PC boots up check to see what the Bios says as it scrolls past (you need to be quick :) ) Chances are if you are running an XP2000 then your motherboard is probably running at 133, so you will need 266MHz ram ie DDR2100

Komplett are doing a 512mb Crucial memory for

if you look at http://www.crucial.com/uk/ they have all sorts of configurators to tell you which chip you need. If you know the PC manufacturer or Mainboard manufacturer.

They are also a good place to buy from.

i don't know the manufacturer / model or motherboard type. :o The tower only has an "over-clock" insert on the front. :)

Shall open it up - I'm not afraid of doing that. Might see if it needs a good vacuuming out at the same time.

J, did you get my PM?

MisterGT seems to have it covered mate.

J, did you get my PM?

Yup - I took a peek but didn't fancy downloading anything to give me this info for a one-off case. Going to reboot now and see if I can spot it. :)

edit Bloody hell MisterGT  It gave me about 1/3 of a second.

edit2: Does ME-20A318ECEE5D mean anything - This is what the computer appears to be called in Device Manager

 Just downloaded it! ON TO THE WRONG BLOODY MACHINE! Was wondering "why the hell is it telling me I have a gig of RAM?"

try again!

If you reboot it again press the 'del' key as it boots, this will put you into the Bios screen, from there you should find out what board you have and also how fast your current memory is running is running. A word of caution though

DONT CHANGE ANY SETTINGS ! :)

I used this program Bengie tdirected me to - was worth it. I am using PC133 SDRAM according to it, on an "unspecified" motherboard.

@ 133 mhz - 256MB on 2 rows, 4 banks.

Is this decent memory, or do you think its worth upgrading this chip as well, may be getting one mutha of a one gig RAM chip?

Nope, its ancient :) I wouldn't even think about adding another 512mb to it, partially because its not very common anymore and therefore more expensive and also because PC133 requires matched pairs (if I can remember that far far back) ie you would need to have 2 x 512mb. To be honest I am suprised your board takes an XP2000 as even my wifes XP1800 is running on a board which takes DDR ram (ie the PC2100 stuff)

Edit: I suspect that your machine contains 2 x 128mb sdrams with 2 slots free

There are plenty of boards that take PC133 and DDR (though not at the same time).

Jason , take the side off the case and see if there is a couple of empty memory slots of a different type.

I'd recommend a 512mb stick of PC2100 DDR (or two) assuming it takes it.

I stand corrected :) the Dr is quite correct.

Jason, if possible you need to find out the make and model of your motherboard. If you then do a web search for it you may be able to get a much better idea of its capabilities and whether an upgrade is worthwhile

Well, does VT8366-8233 mean anything. Thats the "product" of the mainboard

if you take the side off J and look closely it will have the make and model printed on it somewhere. easy to just look in device manager though

if you load that program i showed you J what does it say next to main board?
