Need a RAM chip...

Featured Replies

Well, does VT8366-8233 mean anything. Thats the "product" of the mainboard

I've done a web search on the number you quoted and this would seem to be something to do with the Bios version rather than a reference to the motherboard itself. Sorry, not really much help :)

Well, I've opened her up and I'm still none the wiser as to the motherboad model. :D

I've found out its deffo only one RAM chip in the slot, PC133 256mb, with 3 slots free. The only obvious big letters is an Anti-crush sticker, a V/A VTB8233A black square in the middle, and another small sticker with BN790E on it. There's a sticker on the base of the tower with a 1BIT "guide to your motherboard" but its laid out different to the one in there so I suspect isn't the one.

I have noticed that the RAM actually has two different rows of different RAM types. Two blue rows (empty) with DDR at the top, and two black rows with SDR on (one filled with the 256mb chip)

If this helps.

you'll have two ddr slots and two sd type slots then J

and it will have the make and model on there but it will be printed on rather than a sticker and normally in white. it won't be obvious mate but it will be there :)

Motherboard designtion sounds like an Asus..........

Have a look see if one of the bigger chips, just south of the cpu socket has a name on it...........

Avoid mixing DDR and SDR on the same motherboard. It hardly ever works stable.

You only need a single stick (of either) to make it work.

For the spec machine you've got, check if the board will actually take more than 768MB in the first place. Some older Athlon boards dont (trust me, I've got a few that don't)

As mentioned, it's getting to be an 'old' memory type. I'd get something cheap and cheerful, otherwise you'll spend a fortune on something that will make little difference ;)

J, I just bought some RAM for my Athlon 2000+. On ebuyer 512mb DDR3200 400mhz stuff, working well about

Oh and if you want a cheap motherboard to upgrade with, I've got a mega cheap PC Chips one from ebuyer that are selling at about

J, it sounds like to you need to ebay your existing PC and buy another one

This isn't my main PC I'm on about. My Mesh machine I use normally as my "main pc" is pretty decently specced. This xp2000+ only has a 10gig HDD and the tiny amount of RAM - bought purely for folding (which is why it was cheap - also has DVD-RW ;) unused... yet)

The PC itself is fine for what it does, I just think some more RAM would help it out a bit.

512 will make a difference , and you can ebay the old 256 to get some of the cost back.

No point in spending much money on it.

Indeed - currently looking into a suitable 512 + 256 chip on fleabay. Might take it up to a gig of ram, which would be nice. But we'll see. If possible I don't want to spend any money on this machine, but I think it would be wise to improve the RAM.
