Ideal Wheels - First MkII

Featured Replies

Hi there, first post :-)

AM soon to take delivery of my first ever Skoda, a MkII 2010 2.0 TDI PD SE. I had a couple of questions for the experts please

1) Are there any common upgrades/mods SE owners seek to undertake? I'd love an Elegance centre armrest but not 100% sure its within my abilities for example. Considering parking sensors at about £130.

2) Am also considering new wheels. The stock set are 15" and I'd like to improve the look of the car. Bigger wheels look better, but I know they give a harder ride and I like comfortable too. So what I'm wondering is if there is a general consensus on the ideal compromise. Im thinking no point going to 16" and 20" would be FAR too hard. I know personal preference comes into play a little - and maybe so should replacement tyre prices but would the consensus be toward a 17 or an 18 wheel maybe? Is 18 much harder than 17? Whats the best compromise on looks/comfort? Like I say, personal preference will be important - just wanted some opinions.

Thanks

I didn't want to spunk £600 on 17's and feel no difference and wish Id went for 18's - or spunk the same on 18's for a too hard ride & wish I'd bought 17's - it didnt feel like a silly question...

Regarding 1) I am for example, deciding on the Motorola TK30 I had in my last car Vs the Kufatec Fiscon which would be more expensive, yet tidier. I like having my personal phone AND my Work phone connected to the TK30. It was this type of 'common upgrade' I was referencing...

18,s or 19's would be fine. I'm in the middle of looking for a set of wheels and am staying with 18's for partly the cost of tyres.

And isn't the 2010 octavia the CR engine? I assume you have the CR140.

It was advertised as a PD but the salesman referenced a CR. I wasn't sure, it's a '10 plate June reg 2010. 18's over 19's because of tyres is the sort of opinion I was hoping for - thanks.

Should be the CR. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure the PD was stopped around 2007/08

Back on topic. 18's will be fine as the VRS comes with 18's as standard. So the arches were made to take 18's just remember to get the correct fitment and make sure the ET is okay for the octy. Loads of threads on here about it so just do a little search when you know the spec of the wheels you want.

Had the TK30 removed from my current car today for £20. It'll be £50 (+any wires) for an install into the Skoda. I'd like the Kufatec Fiscon Basic plus to maximise the Bolero but its looking at not much change out of £400 fitted - compared to the £50 alternative which runs my personal and work phones simultaneously compared to the Fiscon's 1. (I emailed them asking if dual phone capability was on the horizon).

On the plus side, a peruse of the forums led to the ordering of http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/307354-octavia-vrs-front-splitter/ an ezlip front splitter :-) I'm monitoring the badge situation too...

If you want to know for certain whether it's PD or CR look at the engine number on the registration document. If it begins with a 'B' its PD, if it begins with 'C' its CR.

For June 2010 my money would be on PD, just. Although the vRS switched to CR in late 2008 the rest of the range didn't go over to CR until autumn 2010.

Pretty sure that's a PD...

I have set of original Skoda 17" Zenith alloys that are lying around in the basement. The tyres aren't great on them. I'm thinking of selling them. I live in Cork but I travel to Drogheda once or twice a month. Would you be keen if I did sell them?

Those are nice wheels, I do like the Zeniths. Keechy had me looking for 18" and have been considering the likes of RS6s for ease of cleaning. Not sure if I fancy a 3hr drive to Drogheda, though if the price was right....?

No price then? Am off to look at a set of 18" 5x112 RS6 alloys tonight. Hopefully they're in good condition.

Picked up 4 RS6 5x112 18" wheels last night for £180. They're in pretty good shape and 3 decent 225/40/R18 tyres.

I'll give them a good clean around the inside and maybe get my local fitters to check the balancing this weekend.

Feel like I got a reasonable deal :-)

Yeah, you want to get rid of those 15" wheels - terrible things.  I'll take them off your hands for a small fee - provided they will fit my 2007 4x4 2.0 litre diesel estate.  Whereabouts are you?  (just as a serious point: does anyone know, pleaase - will facelift 15" wheels fit a pre-facelft Octavia?)

As far as I know, and I'll stand corrected, what matters is the offset (5x112 which should be fine) and overall circumference of the tyre. The actual size of the wheel itself shouldn't make too much difference as long at the tyre wall size reduces as the wheel size increases to the correct overall size.

Thanks for your interest in my wheels, but I think I'm going to hang on to them for a while - just in case I need to revert to winter/thinner tyres come next winter if the 225's are too wide to get any traction in the bad weather.

Willing to listen to others opinions on that though....

I have some vRS Neptunes on bay if you are interested?

I should add also that with an SE steering wheel aching for leather if not buttons I thought that one of those REAL leather steering wheels covers off of eBay that you 'sew' on might be worth the effort. 45 mins using the existing holes in the leather it claimed. On arrival I have to say - it felt nice. I have big hands too, so a slight enlarging on the overall grip circumference on the wheel was no problem. Well, what can I say. 45mins my @rse. 2 hrs later and less than a third of the way through my sore and bleeding fingers could take no more & I ripped it off & f*cked it from me.

Not recommended.

Keep ur 15" wheels for winter tyres as you will find wide tyres will struggle in the snow

I used to do production planning for an aircraft interiors workshop & one of the guys re-leathered steering wheels as his side business.  He'd done dozens of the things & there was usually 6-8 hrs of sewing after getting the pattern right.  He had special pads for his hands & fingers.

Used to charge a small fortune & specialised in Ferraris & Maseratis

Erm....NO.

Having lived with the 18" wheels for a while I can honestly say the road noise is shockingly bad. It feels like I'm driving along with the back window down an inch. I like how the wheels look, but using the phone handsfree has gotten difficult with the added noise. Am actually tempted to change back to the 15's
