ABS 'kicking in' all the time

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Every time we brake on the car the ABS seems to kick in.

I'm sure I've spoke about this before and someone has said to clean the reluctor rings which trigger the sensor that are on the wheel hub assembly.

I know on the fronts that the ring is inside the hub so my question is how do you get to this ring inside the hub without actually having to dismantle the full hub/bearing assembly?

Cheers in advance

Jack up, put the LH wheel on full LH lock, look from the front at the back of the wheel, you will see the shiny reluctor ring, rotate the wheel and clean with a cotton bud dipped in meths.

DB.

Are you sure? ^

The reluctor ring is built into the wheel bearing and is usually red.

Will be hard to see without moving the driveshaft out a little bit.

Many thanks for the replies.

So just to confirm:  I cannot clean the reluctor ring in the method as suggested by mogwye?

If I do what he says I can see what look likes a reluctor ring (but it is white in colour and I am led to believe ring should be orange?).

If you look at the below picture I have a red arrow pointing to the ring that I can see using this method.  Assuming this is not the reluctor ring what actually is it?  You may be able to see on my pic that this ring is a bit worn on my front LH wheel.

the part you arrowed is just the driveshaft debris seal it is just a plastic ring that should stop any stones getting to the reluctor ring to damage it, to be fair if it is kicking the abs in all the time then you need to watch each wheel speed in the abs module and see what is going on, it is either a sensor or damaged ring

Ok,

Can I monitor wheel speed in ABS module using VCDS lite or will I need full software package?

Well I managed to get a log running and it showed up the following from the measuring block.

Am I looking at the correct things here?  Also is there anything that looks out of the ordinary as the speeds have always remained constant on all 4 when this fault was occurring.  The thing I'm unsure of is the binary readings in group 2, should there not be 4 of these?

Looks like I've found the issue, think it was front right sensor as it look pretty much goosed.

I've found a new sensor at dealers but looking at over £50.

I've also found this one listed below:

Anyone know if this is the equivalent as I can get this from Europarts today.

CHeers in advance

You never mentioned whether if this was in wet weather only or dry conditions. I had an issue in wet conditions on bumpy roads. Though changing the wheels for wider ones sorted my issue so I never looked further in to it...

It was in all conditions.

Update on this.  I ended up replacing the front RH abs sensor and also the front LH needed a damn good clean.  The advice from Dann2707 is spot on, cheers mate and excellent thread you made there.

Yay glad I helped dude!! :)

I just cleaned out the sensors on mine as mine kept going off every now and again at low speeds - bit of WD40 and a cotton bud worked wonders !
