Just considering a Superb Est at the moment.

Edging towards the 170bhp model, the same engine that was in my now departed Octy vRS, and it was sweet.

Don't seem to be many around 2nd hand though unfortunately. Nearly all 140's and 1.6's.

I'm sure somewhere in the cobwebs of my mind that there have been some unpleasant issues with the 140's in the past  though, or have I got that wrong?

Dunno what to think or do tbh.

140 PD or CR? PD engines (170 one) suffer from the injector problem (warranty issue?), and the DPF can sometimes play up. CR's are generally too young to ID potential issues.

My 140 HP / 320 nM CR mapped to 186 HP / 405 nM feels just fine for the big Superb...

CR was the later one on the facelift Octy vRS (170 bhp)  iirc. Did Skoda do a similar upgrade on the 140 too?

I'm confused...as ever...on technical issues.

PD or Pumpedüse are the older types, CR or Commonrail are the newer. Both use a different technique to inject the diesel into the cylinders. CR to me seems smoother, waaaaay quieter, and I hope some of the problems with the PD's have been rectified.

If you can swing it, try to find a CR.

The only PD engine in the MkII Superb was the trusty old 1.9 TDi PD105 lump. Reliable but agricultural.

All other engines are CR, including the 1.6 TDi CR105, 2.0 TDi CR140 and 2.0 TDi CR170.

No reliability issues with any of the CR's.

Yes earlier Superb 140 models had PD and then changed to 140CR from around 2010/11 (not certain what exact plates that would affect in the UK)

THAT'S what I wanted to read, tar.

So the 140 was changed to CR spec at the same time as the 170?

I knew about the 170 from the vRS, but really wasn't aware that things had changed on the 140 too, and both have now had the previous problems seemingly eradictaed then?

I was really dismissing the 140 as a troublesome beast, but that seems like something from the past now then.

I don't remember a PD 170 Superb actually.  I think it was always 170CR on the 2008- model unless there were some earlier models that we didn't get over here

Good point, the early 2008 / 2009 MkII Superb's were also available with the 2.0 TDi PD140 (in addition to the 1.9 TDi PD105).

So that is two PD engines.

I'm almost certain that the older PD170 wasn't available in the Superb, a good job too, I had this engine in my vRS, never again.

The wife has the PD140 in her Octavia Scout, again whilst quite rough and ready it has proved reliable.

If it's a CR you are safe, avoid the PD170 (in any guise) like the plague!

The CR170 in my vRS was a lovely engine.

That's why I thought that would be the best one for me IF I decide to purchase.

Is the CR140 pretty good too then?

Never driven one tbh.

The 1.6 looks good on fuel consumption figures, but a bit of a slug p'eraps?
