Winter wheels + tyres

Featured Replies

I know this is the wrong time of year to start thinking about this, but as I'm expecting to take ownership of my first Yeti this week, we're considering an end of season ski trip.

I came across the following pic on Instagram, and wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of somewhere in the UK that could provide with a similar wheel setup for winter use? Failing that, any other recommendations appreciated.

There have been lots of threads on here about winter tyres and the various makes. Several members have also found that Goodyear Vector All Season tyres have been effective.

As to that photo, I don't know what the wheels are, but the tyres look more like 16" Mud Terrain tyres which are often not the most suitable, or correctly marked, as a winter tyre in Europe.

Thanks Llanigraham - had assumed those tyres weren't really suitable, just like the chunky look. I imagine the road noise would be horrendous.

I'll check the other threads for recommended general winter tyres. Does anyone happen to know what the optimum rim size and tyre width is for a Yeti in the rain and snow? (it's a 140bhp FL if that makes any difference)

I'd say the optimum tyre size for a winter is the 205/(55?) on a 16" inch rim (it should be in the handbook but I don't recall just now). I've got 225/50-17 Michelin X Ice Nordic Compound right now (as teh car came with them fitted) but I don't like them as there's too little grip on snow and ice and too much understeer. I've always been really happy with Nokian winter tyres (I live in Finland), but if I lived in the UK, I'd consider the latest Continental [WinterViking?] 850s as well as the Nokian WR D3 or A3, if you can find them. Those chunky tyres in the picture will be about as useful as a chocolate teapot in winter conditions. You need a tyre with the right, soft compound, deep tread, and lots of sipes. If you go to nokiantyres.com, there's plenty to read about.
