retro-fit another electric socket?

Featured Replies

We run a TomTom and would like to retain the ability to charge a phone as well; has anyone retrofitted a second cigarette lighter/electric socket in the front of a Yeti? And is there a how-to guide?

I know there's another one in the boot, but historically we've used the third one to charge the in car fridge or the childrens DVD player.

Should not be difficult to tap into the wires behind the existing cig socket and run wires to anywhere else on the car. I'd be inclined to wire in an additional; socket behind the dash as I hate seeing wires trailing around the car interior. Then feed the wire up to the "A" pillar and pop the TomTom there.

I'm contemplating adding a 3rd socket in mine - to the rear of the centre console - as my lad likes to charge his phone/gaming systems from the back seat.

Tapping into the wiring of the current central socket needs the side of the console removing, then a circuit could be piggy-backed onto that. However I'm not sure how trustworthy that will be knowing the complexity of the modern canbus wiring systems. On mine I have used a "doubling" fuse holder like this:

to fit a single cigarette socket on the top of the dash for my sat nav.

I've yet to pick up my Yeti (Monday) but already I'm wondering why there's an auxillary input to the radio in the centre arm rest but no means to charge the audio equipment you plug into it.

^ exactly.

thanks for the thoughts and links, chaps. I suppose my searching could have been more thorough.

I've bought an adaptor that converts a single 12v socket into 2 x 12v sockets and 2 x USB sockets, really handy as I can charge/run different things - in-car camera, phone, etc.

I have fitted a multi socket in the center dash box. It is wired from the fuse box on the drivers side of the dash using a feed that is only live when the ignition is switched on this allows the dash camera to switch on with the ignition as well as a few other things I use when towing the caravan.

^ as above, a twin cig lighter socket in the said box,  small hole in base for feed cable, connected to the std socket by the h/brake, got the orig socket out of its socket and soldered the extension line onto it. Did this about 2 yrs ago and have had no canbus probs, the cable is just fed pushed up behind the plastic tunnel shroud on the nearside!\  System used to recharge model boat batteries, delivers in excess of 1 amp!

OK, for the time being I've found a 2x /1x USB cheapo adaptor, but will explore a more integrated solution to make better use of the dash top box.

I am looking to wire in an additional aux socket for the Satnav/Dashboard camera. Reading some threads I have see the use of piggy back fuse connetors mentions which makes getting a supply easy. One question to ask is....

Where is a suitable earthing point near the drivers side fuse box. I don't have my YETI yet so I am just planning for the big day. Also which fuse is the console aux power on? so I know where to tap the piggyback onto.

I earthed mine to one of the dash mounting bolts that a few other things were earthed to. They are obvious when you open the fuse box cover.

Someone else has asked the same question about which fuse that is, and I don't think there has been an answer. The guide in the Tech section makes a suggestion of which one to use.

I have one of these. Gives 2x USB plus a cigarette lighter outlet. The one linked is cheaper than I paid too.

I have enjoyed working through this posting and the links. Although my Yeti is not with me yet, I have been collecting the bits for this job for running my satnav:-

- piggy back mini fuse holder as advised above  -  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170758888553?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

- cigarette lighter with cover so nothing can get in the hole by mistake  -  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400683150342

- double outlet splitter/socket with a usb socket on the the back  -  http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00F9OK7AK/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just need to work out what the smallest value fuse I can fit now.

I have just used one of the piggy back fuse holders for my dash cam. I could only find one fuse that went dead with the ignition off. That was the fuse for the wipers. Has anyone else used one and which fuse did they use.

The piggy back did fit well and seemed well made.
