Pls help me .. engine keeps cutting out!

Featured Replies

Ok basically bought a w reg skoda fabia 1.4 16v . Was really impressed even tho it was overheating. That blew the head gasket. Basically it was the water pump not working ( A CRAPPY DESIGN to be honest... who make the end of a water pump plastic)?? had that and the timing n headgasket changed.... Started for the first time afterwards, seemed ok.... then drove it... after 10 seconds just moving it if became stationary it died....,, restared tried again n the same thing.....been hitting my head against a brick wall.... checked the following.. inletmanifold, tightened ect, exhaust manifold... tightened..... egr valve cleaned.... throttlebody cleaned..... thermostat housing has broken...( theres a pipe that runs from the top of the water tank... runs across the rockercover and splits... goes in to a little plastic nozzle..well it did but it snapped (crappy design yet again....) Cranshaft breather hoze was clogged with oil and water mix from head gasket... Cleaned.... Had breakdonw look at it... no idea at the cutting out but did do engine managment readings... O2 sensor is naffed/// but that wouldnt make the car cut out would it/? i dont belive for a second its the timing.... when ive managed to get the car on a strtaight ( without bgetting stuck in stationary) ive had 90 mph out of it and it had alot more power to give... im fairly sure if the timing was out it wouldnt hit 60 !!!! Please someone give me an explanation for this crappy french car before i just set the dam thing alite.... Its a DOHC Engine..

Many Thanks

it may as well be french¬..

sepulchrave ive done that  and no different... really unimpressed with the car.. cannot think what else to look at , any ideas

Cheers

Can you be more specific about the symptoms, does it cut out randomly while driving or does it just cut out when the throttle is shut, does it misfire or become lumpy before it cuts out or does it just stop dead? Check the multiway plug connecting the ECU to the coilpack is snugged tightly and the plastic catch has latched in place.

hey,

sorry  sepulchrave, Its asoon as i take my foot of the throttle... so when going to stop or whatnot... its ok when you first start up it idles fine...you go to drive it seems ok then if you go to chnge gear or slow down the revs die down and its dead... have to bump it to get going again as battery is always flat as have to keep trying to restrt every time i stop!

cheers

slight misfire /lumpyness possibly before it cuts out!

i think the temp sender may be gone... it is quite brown like a rusty colour on the end... and when i took it out i could turn it round a little although i turned it more and it locked so put it back in thermo housing... could this be the answer?

many thanks

A flat battery can cause lots of problems as well, take it off and give it a full charge or replace it if knackered, temperature sensors last about three to five years before drifting out of range so yours is almost certainly no good.

would that cause the car to conk out? tried another bttery and no better

many thanks

The only thing that will make your car conk out is a faulty coilpack or crank sensor, do you get the engine check light?

engine management light is on was cheeky and called out aa to look. he couldnt work ot why it was cutting out,, he read the codes of which there were 8... cant remeber all but 4 were misfires on each cylinders and he 02 sensor.. he cleared all fault codes and the only one to stick was o2 sensor... ( i belive the misfires were down to when head gasket went! Is there aan idle control valve on my car>

No idle control valve, all dealt with by the throttle body.

throttle sensor (pedal)

any other ideas>

sorry where is the crankshaft sensor and throttle sensor?

can u reset the egr valve, It almost feels like its overfueling?

Do you actually have VCDS?

  • Author

no but i know from last nie the only error on there is 02 sensor

So how have you adapted the throttle body?

if its coming up with a 02 sensor fault, un plug it and see if it makes running any difference if so replace the maf but if youve got power when it is actually running, cant see it being that. My bet is timing/camshaft sensor or throttle sensor on the pedal

1st n second gear theres power but in 3rd it doesnt seem to climb much paast 3000 rpm... but like i said if i manage to get the car going and not stopping at junctions ( keeping my foot on the accelator all the time....) i can get the car up too 90 plus.. wouldnt the camshaft sensor throw error codes?wil try the 02 sensor in the morning and update.

and there is instructions on this forum on how to do the throttlebody adaption, something to do with turning key to ignition lights for a few seconds then back to off but leave keys in.. then start.. it revs up and down a few times.

have you got any 02 readings?

Doesn't work on the 1.4 petrol.
