When the recovery guy was out, I turned it over while he checked out if that would work and it didnt. It barely turns maybe a quarter of a revolution and very slowly.

Battery

Battery

Worth checking also for melted cables/fusebox too.  Maybe more than one issue afoot here.

Battery cables and fuses on top of the battery all good. No multimeter but when the ignition and headlights are on they seem normal brightness.

Lights might seem a normal brightness but the load placed on the battery while trying to crank the car might be over powering the battery.

Agreed, but without A meter it is hard to check.

And there is still the mystery vanishing of roughly 1.9 litres of oil that didn't cause a runaway by burning and didn't get blown through the exhaust.

Update from the Garage.

Turbo is fubar and intake is full of oil. I knew that. But I didn't know part of the impeller had shredded. Probably means shaft broke and it shifted and make contact.

Going to need the intake/intercooler flushing. I knew that.

Pulling the plugs and spinning it spewed engine oil out. It was oil locked. I guessed that.

Disconnecting the turbo it starts and runs. "The veg oil is stinking and smoking the garage out though". I'm guessing that is more like a coating of engine oil on the intake, valves, and exhaust manifold getting hot and smoking.

They don't have a diesel compression tester kit but nothing sounds odd. "But you might be throwing good money after bad putting a new turbo on such a high miler it could just blow the rest of the engine". Is 165k with full service history a high miler for a VW TDI VE engine?

I'm going to have a "listen" tomorrow morning. He is going to price up his best price for a recon turbo. I guess he will be using Andrew Page or Eurocar parts so I'm going to price up the independants once he gives me the parts number (it should be the integrated manifold model if I'm right.

Any advice on recon people or ebay sellers worth using?

If it sounds ok, I'm going to suggest

1) Full intake flush.

2) Full engine oil flush and change.

3) Drop the sump while it is empty check for sludging and replace the oil pump pickup strainer (they clog easily)

4) Use VW 506.0 rated 0w30 full synthetic for this as it is down as being and extended interval one car in the service book.

Thanks guys :)

Go on YouTube seen a guy called bmac vag he shows you how to rebuild your turbo .think he said he got a new impeller for £ 130.00 so have a look

Oh right cool cheers. Will have a looksee :) I wonder if the garage might be up for cartridge swap :)

Just been and had a look. Smokes more than me but I guess I would too if I had coated my intake with engine oil.

Sounds normal. No additional clattering or rattling other than normal cold diesel. Surprisingly quiet.

I can get a turbo from the Latvian recon ebay guys with 4000+ positive feedback for £250+exchange fee and 1 day delivery fee once they have the old one off and I can get the numbers.

Garage reckons book/computer says 6 hours to do the job. They can steam clean the intake and pipes but can't flush the intercooler as they aren't equiped. They can engine flush and say another hour to drop the sump, clean it and replace the pickup pipe/strainer. It is supposed to be done every roughly 75k anyway.

If I supply the parts they can do it for cash to keep it down :)

Who is best for prices on gaskets/oil strainer pickup/oil feed pipe please?

I'm guessing I'm going to need the feed pipe for the turbo, gaskets for the intake and exhaust manifold and the Pickup pipe/strainer for the oil pump.

Anything else you can think of?

They will be using VW approved 5w30. I checked.

Update time. I have the car back. Smoking much less. Drives like new. But the glow plug/CEL is flashing so I'm going to need to get the codes read and reset and I've discovered a leak from the injection pump weaping down between the pump and the block, building up in the webs on the pump body casting then dripping.

Doesn't look to be the top seal or IQ seal though. Hmmm.

And my luck gets even worse. The replacement turbo from turbo active is now kaput.

The intake casting is seperate from the cartridge. Haven't got it off yet so can't tell how it has failed but reaching down behind the intake you can feel that it is wobbling about seperate from the cartridge/manifold.

There was a gentle pop and smoke and running off power so I thought the intake pipe had blown off but it appears much worse. And happened on the same road the turbo blew last time.
