Have you ever played chess with a pidgeon George? Sometimes you jut need to accept you don't know everything, I've bought and sold 30 odd cars this year, I think I assure you I do know my stuff on this, I'm not going to argue this point any more.

  • This is correct, all you need is the log book and the tear off strip will do. I taxed a car using just this only last week, providing the slip hasn't been stamped they can accept that. the rest is on

  • You still have to have 'Valid Insurance' to buy VED (Tax a Car) You just do not need to show a Valid Certificate at a Post Office. *A dealer/trader can have insurance covering the vehicle)   The T

  • Why does it matter? Do you need to show it to anyone?

"How it works

If you have a vehicle tax reminder (form V11 or V85/1 for HGV), bring it to your nearest vehicle license-issuing Post Office branch along with:

A valid insurance certificate or cover note, which must be valid on the date from which the tax disc starts or the date the tax disc is issued whichever is the latest. Photocopies, renewal invitations, policy receipts or schedules cannot be used."

TeflonTom, i am sure you know your stuff.

So does it stand as you stated, post#43 ?

"nah, get with the times, you don't need insurance to tax a car anymore'"

You do need insurance to tax a car, if the DVLA know a car is not SORN and there's no insurance shown on the MID database then they'll send a letter out saying SORN it or insure it or you'll face a fine.

I work for a big insurance company in Support Services and every 4-6 weeks I get a report from the DVLA with all car registrations that are registered to our customers that don't match the DVLA/MID database, therefore, appear to be uninsured. I have to cross reference them with our policies to see why they are different to what we hold. It could be they've changed car, got a private reg or added a Temp additional vehicle and just not informed us or the DVLA.

So to say you don't need insurance to get a car taxed is false information as far as we are concerned, why would the DVLA go to this much trouble to see if a car has the relevant insurance or not.

It is actually a Penalty that the DVLA send notices of £80 not Changing Owner etc. not Fines.

£1000 threats,  then its Debt Collectors that it is passed to.

& even though we are the UK, England/Wales is different from Scotland in what other actions they take.

DVLA is an Executive Agency.

But one thing that does have people fall foul of the law, is Making False Declarations.

So the questions being asked and the answers & information you make to the DVLA are Declarations.

Road Traffic Acts require Motor Vehicles to be insured unless declared Off Road,

even if they are off road and not on the Public Highway but are taxed, since the UK Laws Changed.

(there are a few variations on things, but to Tax a Car/Vehicle it requires Insurance,

and thats 2 parts, 'Vehicle covered to minimum 3rd party, and then driver or Drivers or Group Policy, Hire/Courtesy, pool cars etc.)

After further investigation, it turns out it's not this form I filled out. Apparent

Y because it was from the auction there is no documentation at all, so it is a different form that I filled out, with no green slip on the bottom. Apparently this only takes up to two weeks to come back so i will just have to sit, wait, twiddle my thumbs and buy some stuff ready to fit

if there is no documents with the car it won't be from an auction, unless it's from a police seizure auction and it's got bad history due to previous owners
