Octavia Mk3 VRS gear shifter(Knob) on VRS MK2

Featured Replies

I have the mk2 VRS TFSI, took it in recently for some work at Garlands, and whilst there had a butchers at the new VRS, very nice, not in a position to buy one at the moment (just bought a house) but I really liked the gear shifter compared to the look of the current one on my Octavia, does anyone know if it would be a straight swap?

Cheers again for any help people

Also looking at this option. eBay have a few on offer. £49.99 and you can get the red or white/grey stitching. Very tempting on the red as my vRS is Corrida. :)

Think it'll be a case of buy the full thing, remove the frame part that gives the base of the gaiter/boot shape, and use the frame from your mk2 gearstick gaiter.

:)

I've ordered one, along with a steering wheel retrim from royal steering wheels, same design with extra padding and silver stitching.

Cheers Guys, I have a black Magic with the white trim, I was looking at the ones on Ebay they do look very tempting, VRS77 would you be able to put a picture up when you have recieved and fitted it?

Yeah no probs, might be a couple of weeks before I have my wheel back.

Think it'll be a case of buy the full thing

What is this assumption (mk3 knob being not compatible with mk2 gaiter) based on?

Having a look at my gaiter and then looking at the mk3 in the showroom and online. Thru look totally different shaped. The mk3 is much more angular/more square.

Update. Got the gearknob.

The gaiter will not fit, not enough material to stretch that far onto the mk2 surround.

Plus the material is vinyl, the mk2 is proper leather so another cost cutting on the mk3. There are many parts that have been skimped on the mk3 that people seem to have just dismissed. I reckon the mk2 actually cost Skoda more to produce. Just look at the 1 piece seats in the mk3 vrs.

Back to the knob, the other issue is the depth of hole on the new knob, its about 2" shorter so the knob sits too high.

So my plan is to try to swap gaiters over (the mk2 is very hard to get the gaiter off the actual knob, still trying)

Then I'm going to have to drill the new knob a bit deeper so it sits lower on the gear stick.

Its all on!

I'll put some pics up tomorrow.

Had to drill the centre out with 12mm drill bit then it drops right down the shaft to the knurled section ready for the clip to be tightned on.

Steering wheel retrim still waiting for from royal steering wheels.

Looks like it's a lot of work and a questionable result :(

vrs777, are you happy with the mod, would you do that again?

Its easy than it may look, I could do it again in about 10mins flat.

The knob does look better than the old one, feels a little smaller in the hand.

Personally my old one was tired after 123k so needed replacing, so yes I would do it again.

Some pics with it fitted:

And my new wheel retrim with sillver stitching, extra padding to make it thicker (original VRS wheel is quite thin) and bottom plastic covered in leather too.

Looks Nice. Just ordered a mk3 knob for my mk2.

I thought that it would fit right on. But I understand that I need to drill a little. ;)

Drill or file the inner tabs off, the mk3 has tabs both sides rather than just the one flat side of the mk2.

I found a 12mm drill bit did a great job. Just check the depth needed against the mk2.

Personally I used a small jubilee clip to keep the knob secured to the knurled part of the shaft.

How did you get the gaitor of the new mk3 knob?

With the mk3 clip its fairly easy to figure out when the parts are in front of you.

Why not just order the knob without the gaitor given it goes in the garbage anyway? Unless there is no separate part number for it...

Don't think you can. I ordered it thinking I may be able to swap them over. You can't though but saying that I wouldn't anyway because the boot on the mk3 is really really cheap and poor quality material.

Did you re-use the old clip or did you use the new clip off the new gaitor

New clip just traps the old gaitor between it and the new knob.

Is a tight fit mind as the mk2 boot is thick leather rather than the thin vinyl of the mk3 but with a good squeeze you can get the clips to engage as they should.

hadn't checked this for a while, looks good, well next month this may be my treat, dosen't look to hard, also with the steering wheel how much was that? might mean stuck wih SWMBOS Micra for a while though!

Thanks for posting the pics

I perchance a gear knob from the new yeti on eBay. It's the same design as the o3.

I did not have to modify it. And the gaitor was real leather.

So it was a 2 min switchover.

£115 for the wheel, you can buy my spare for £30 if you really want to do it.
