Humax woes and cures

Featured Replies

Possibly not news to a lot of owners. I've had a few problems recording a series of programs, with differing broadcast times recently and found the only way was to record each individually. The other night came a panic shout from Swimbo - all her recorded stuff was giving out a message that the channel was scrambled. We've also had a lot of handset lockups recently ,which made me wonder if the remote was a bit heavy on batteries. Going into the record list I found that it does not delete recorded events .So I updated this list and now I can once again record a series. The scrambled item was the old CPU controlled cure- switch off /on. Bonus on the record list edit has been a less touchy remote.

BUMP FOR FURTHER LOOKS

What model? Have you tried raising this on Humax forums?

e.g. http://myhumax.org/forum/

Haven't tried Humax forums, as most of the replies I've had from Humax are to try a reset/retune which resets everything and means a total reprogram of records, which means Mrs V might lose something. What I'm doing is to do a record reset/update ,without having to go back in and program records. To date, I've had no problems with recording a series ,after having to go to record schedule. IMHO, the problem has been memory problems on the record list, with ancient stuff not being deleted by the software, instead of software shutting off records early . I shoved this in here for other users to try to see if it cured similar problems. Model 9150. At the moment I've got the latest update on the laptop, but laptop refuses to see Humax via serial cable.

I've had some strange going ons with my FOXSAT-HDR over the past month or so, mainly missed recordings as the series recording had vanished, latest being the last GP!  Some of this appeared to be recording conflicts - though the conflicts were days apart! I thought that I was being very sloppy and just leaving the schedule "as it" and that means that I tend to pick up repeats which can be annoying, or in the case of GP and BTCC etc quite handy as they run on from year to year - I never considered that the software should be sorting completed series after they had ended. On the subject of S/W updates, I think that I stuffed them on to a stick and got them into the FOXSAT-HDR that way, though the issued instructions needed following exactly.

Overall all my Humax FOXSAT HD devices have behaved very well since new back just after they were launched.

Not a model I've familiar with. Have you tried trimming the channel list down?

rum4mo - I was beginning to think I had problems, till I deleted older recorded programs . Doing a lot of what yours seems to do, and handset locking up . Since tidying up the older watched recordings on the menu option ,I seldom get handset lock up and I can now set record for a series .Hence my post ,to see if anyone else had found this .

I see you are looking at the firmware update; for sure - this should address some issues.

Another basic thing to check is the input signal level from dish or aerial.

If borderline, this can cause perceived lockups and slow response behaviour.

Not personally owned a Humax, but know they are popular due to low price.

Hope you get it sorted.

It's a freeview model, but I've no/little signal problems. I installed my aerial , looking for max signal with dips of equal level and setting aerial in middle, then connected to an amplifier with multiple outputs and a moderate gain . As a transmission tech, I'm aware of the problems with low signals. Analogue produces snow, digital starts off with lack of sync and loss of signal .My background- getting a lot of stuff over the Atlantic in the days of the Cold War to USA, and Canada, and how to get 960 and then 2700 calls ,or a 405/ 625 TV signal over a land cable .Then more than 2000 calls on a pair of copper wires, or a fibre optic cable.

Humax are the top end of the freeview / freesat market.

"Humax are the top end of the freeview/freesat market"  - exactly, for people in the know!  Also they left most Sky box for dead in the picture quality front. I think that even the later BT boxes are Humax.  Humax seem to care about their products, though it has been said that re-furbs seem to be a bit iffy.

Tidying up the older recordings - well I might do that after I've watched them - maybe these devices should "dump" recorded programs after 12 months - that might make me/wife watch what has been recorded for a quiet cold night that never happens!

Unfortunately Humax did not connect the viewed programs and delete list with the recorded schedule list, and so you ended up with problems.

Both the Foxsat HDR and the Fox HD ® can have modified firmware to improve functionality.  I use the Foxsat HDR to record and watch the programs in another room via a Rasp Pi running XMBC.
