Well, I've been playing with my mates VBOX data logger and trying to calibrate my iPhone to measure car sprint times as close to the VBOX as possible.

 

I've managed to get my iPhone reading within 0.3 seconds to that of the vbox, consistently across over 20 runs, with the VBOX 0.3 seconds quicker on it's measurement.

 

Now, had a few blasts in the VRS TSI hatch and recorded a 5.9 sec average 0-60 dash with the iPhone (3 runs),.......very, very pleased with that!!

 

This engine is just great!

 

And, this is before any remap with no down hills before anyone is cheeky enough to say

I reckon at this rate, your S3 will be doing about 4 secs!!! 

So the iPhone app was recording times 0.3s slower than the VBOX and the iPhone recorded a 5.9s -> VBOX would record a 5.6s? Surely that can't be right.

TudorM, I think the VRS TSI is kicking out more BHP than the stats suggest, however the TSI engine in the Golf GTI regularly achieves 6 second dashes to 60 and I think from memory the VRS is a little lighter believe it or not!

 

I think these things need to be taken with a pinch of salt, however the VRS is a 6 second car in standard guise without a doubt with the right launch.

Hehe yea you might be right, someone got 4.8 on a vbox for S3 but I'm not so sure lol

Great time for octy

I thought you couldn't yet remap the new engines, only use the tuning boxes... Plus, I don't think the lap timer would be that accurate. 4,9s from only 269 hp with a FWD with no diff... don't think so.

 

PS: The Megane RS with a diff and 265 hp does 6,5s.

TudorM, the Megane RS is quicker than 6.5, trust me I know that for a fact.

 

I think bottom line is, with grip, the Octy TSI VRS is very nimble for a big car and can easily achieve 6 seconds sprints,...if the engine can be mapped rather than using a tuning box and does achieve 0-60 in 5 seconds, that is very possible considering 300+ bhp. In the wet, no chance!! In the dry with the perfect launch, possible,...

According to the inbuilt lap timer (needs to be activated by vcds in some countries) 0-60 at 4,9 sec, tfsi remapped and dyno to 269hp on wheels (300+hp engine) electronic exhaust cutout and OAF with CAI, forge IC. It's a nice family car!

I'm a renaultsport nut and the quoted 0-60 for a 265 is 6.0 and 6.1 for the 250 that came before it. Sub 6 seconds on standard cars have been recorded by numerous magazines.

No doubt but not 4.9 im guessing?! The last magazine shoot/article I took part in was with half a dozen of the quickest MK1 modified Focus's. A number of us knew how to launch well, had over 320bhp and equal torque in stripped out cars, very grippy tyres and Quaife LSD's. Nothing we did could bring the times below 5.9 seconds and the cars running 70bhp less were no slower off the mark! FWD is good for so much. 0-60 times are not where they excel imo.  

30-130 mph is the real tester for performance hatches

I struggled to achieve true sub 6 second 0-62's with a 315bhp 4WD Subaru on a grippy drag strip. 5.62 secs was my best time, but I am a fat bloke and the manual gearbox probably cost me half a second because it needed third gear to get there. My standard UK Impreza with similar power to the VRS managed 6.08 secs, but it could get there in second.

 

Overall my Octy VRS TSI feels much slower than a standard 1999 UK Impreza Turbo from 0-60, but once moving the Octy is a very good match, and would slaughter both of my Scoobs below 3000rpm . FWD does really hurt the Octy's sprint starts. It is pretty easy to spin the wheels in second gear so you really cannot put all of the available power down until third unless you are on flat and fresh tarmac.

 

I personally think that 220ps feels about right for the VRS TSI. The two VRS's I have driven have not felt like they had more power than quoted, but perhaps this is because I was used to other cars which are as fast or faster. The TSI engine is a truly superb unit, but it cannot match the old Jap boxers for sound or driver thrill. The offbeat burble, induction roar, and lag, lag, ignite performance of the boxers just made them more characterful and loveable.

 

0-60 is 6 secs is impressive for any FWD car, but in-gear acceleration from low rpm's is the TSI's most impressive trait.

the mk3 seems to sprint better then the mk2 in my opinion

Sorry, I'll temper it by saying that I absolutely love my family car. I just need to get it chipped, lowered, debadged, get the roof wrapped, fit some spacers, change the air filter, get a private plate, add a pedal box and have the windows tinted and it'll be great...

Loving the flexibility of this engine, it's quick that's for sure and with the right launch is very capable.

 

I must say that the mid range is where it seems to impress though as it has enough of that diesel type torque to keep me smiling whilst overtaking the odd Veyron

Hey, we're one big happy Skoda family. I keep my nerve endings well hidden but I am a bit of a provocateur. To be honest, I find the mid-range performance fine and it's certainly a better indication of drivability than 0 - 60 but if I had read some of the posts on here before getting my car I would have been very underwhelmed.
