controlling which NIC is used for specific IP connection in W2k server

Featured Replies

I have a little dilema I'm trying to resolve.

I have a single server running Win2k server with two network cards. Let's call this server "1" and each network card "a" and "b".

Both of these network cards are on the same subnet (192.168.192.0) with different IP addresses (192.168.192.64 and 192.168.192.65) and each one needs to connect to a specific server on the same subnet (servers "2" and "3"). At one time, one target server, say "2" will be sending to my Win2k server box, the other "3" will be receiving.

If the target machines were on different subnets, I could configure a NIC on the server to be on each subnet, solving the problem. However, I can't

At the moment, all comms to both servers go through one of the two NICs "a", effectively more than halving the bandwidth and "b" is unused.

How can I configure a TCP stack to direct traffic via a specific NIC for a specific remote IP? Can I do this at an OS level or do I need some filtering software?

Any ideas?

This is all going through a pair of Cisco Catalyst switches running a Supervisor 720 engine. Some servers are dual-attached so I have 802.11q encapsulation, but this isn't the case for my 64 and 65 NICs.

edit: I guess I can control which target mac address is used from the cisco

Depending on the network adaptors.. and the drivers, you can setup vlans and teaming.. failing that, a vlan on the cisco or MAC filtering is crude but would work.

(i have all these options on the intel nic driver in my desktop machine)

I'll have a look at vlaning the NIC at a software driver level.

Already have VLANs on the cisco seperating different subnets so can't go down that route.

Both cards are in an old but beasty HP/Compaq DL580G2, one of them fibre, one copper. NC7770 I think is one of them. Will check and play tomorrow
