Need some advice regarding powder coating alloys....

We are looking at picking up our Citigo next week and as its in white I think the silver alloys look a bit bland (personal view).

I don't fancy doing any other mods externally (i.e decals, skirts, spoilers, etc) but I'd love to get the wheels painted black.

Saw this pic on Autotrader and this is the look I'd like to go for...

So I have found a place in Bradford that can powder coat them black at £1 per inch. So roughly a set of four will cost me about £60 which isn't bad and found a lot of good reviews about these guys http://www.cascoatings.com

Anyway here comes my questions...

Anyone had any experience with powder coating alloys?

What finish would look better - matt or gloss?

Also to powder coat the wheels I need to take the wheels off the car and remove the tyres and centre caps.

So unless I can find a spare set of wheels from somewhere I'll have to put the car on bricks or some jack stands for a few days

Dam that's cheap... one of the guys at the tyre fitters I used asked me if I had mine done at cas.

If I hadn't bought all the paints to do my winter set myself I'd give these guys a go :( £20 extra for not spending hour after hour sanding them down? Yes please.

Personally, I loved the gloss black of my Citigo Sport alloy wheels

Made cleaning them seem effortless and hid the dust really well.

Not a fan of matt black to be honest, but its up to the individual which they prefer as always

Tell them you were sent by Chris (Octy vRS) and Alan (Passat R-36)and you will get some discount(10%)

Cas Coatings, Eccleshill, Bradford?

Had my winter alloys done by them

You will need to remove the tyres first and have them fitted afterwards again..Add to cost

Also black powdwercoat needs topping with clearcote or the finish will be satin rather than glossy..Add to cost

OK they do a great job...

but..... The Wheel Specialists (Garforth, Leeds) are better, because that do a better job and includes tyre removal and refitting + they turn them around on the same day:  http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/?adw&gclid=CN232KnAxr0CFenjwgodIEgA5w

I had my Neptunes done by them...They are better than new!!

How about Plastidip with a topcoat of gloss? It is really easy to do it yourself, and inexpensive to. When you sell the car, just peel of the Plastidip. The rims will look brand new!

All thx for your advice and views. I guess when looking into this I didn't factor in the cost of removing the tyres, post clear coat on them, then adding the cost of putting the tyres back on, re-balancing them and of course buying 4 jack stands and the cost comes in excess of £200.

I then got a quick web quote from The Wheel Specialist, Garforth using a 15% discount code. This came in at just under £300 and for this they would strip, refit and balance the wheels, powder coat them and also wax the wheels all on the same day. And they aren't too far for me to get to.

Then Mort suggestion sounds good using Plasti Dip. Need to do some more research and work out whether I need to prime them first. But this would cost me under a hundred and become a pet project to complete over Easter.

Now the wife wants me to price up vinyl wrapping the roof and mirrors in black. Joy. Found a place in Huddersfield that do it and asked them for a quote.

Have a look at this thread

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/294390-dip-it-dip-it-real-gooda-diy-wheel-refurb-thread/

Sparkly did his Leon winter wheels with grey plastidip style stuff from CardipUK

http://www.cardipuk.com/

They also do a pack of 4 can specifically for sets of alloys

http://www.ekmpowershop28.com/ekmps/shops/cardipuk/aerosol-packs-x-4-400ml-cans-232-p.asp

you could also get a few cans extra and do the roof and mirrors in plastdip stuff instead of wrap.

depends on how confident you are in your DIY powers i guess

Thx PastyBoy. I'll look into this. I'll see what the vinyl wrap quote comes to then decide whether to do the roof and mirrors as well with Plastidip

Mort1, I've decided to go with the Plastidip for the wheels. How many 400ml aerosol cans do u think I would need. Plan to apply about four coats and two coats of the aerosol glossifier. Considering the wheels are 14" in size how about 4 + 2 cans?

I'll leave the mirrors and roof for later in the year.

Thats plenty enough. I guess 5-6 layers i fine.

Would be nice for everyone to see the result. Pictures please :)

The cans arrived in the post so I will tackle spraying the spare wheel I bought off Damo and see how it turns out. Then tackle the other four.

I'll take regular picks and try to put together a detail write up.

Great job! Looks really good :)

Did you feel the need to use all of the Dip and Glossyfier?

For the five wheels I ended up using 3 cans of Dip and 1 can of Gloss
