Dip it, dip it real good!..................(a DIY wheel refurb thread)

Featured Replies

Test wheel has begun folks, gulp. :)

Ok general boring stuff

Wheel prep was:

Snowfoam

APC

De-iron

De-tar

Wipe down with Meths, ChrisRS' idea

The wheels have some scuffs to the outer edge which I have lightly sanded, this isn't a full refurb, more a temporary job and also experiment until spring when I will have a better chance of painting

I will be applying light coats at fifteen minute intervals.

The plan is five coats gun metal, two coats metallic silver clear coat to add fleck, then final coat of pearlescent clear coat, reaching the magic eight recommended coats.

Never done this before so doing a test wheel first.

Test lab is my kitchen with all the windows open and cold beers in the fridge, pizza break around half eight seems optimum.

Let's see what happens

Couple of before snaps and the wipe down.

Fearful, already went too big on layer 1

You will note I am masking nothing as the dip in theory (thanks youtube) shouldn't stick to the tyres and can be peeled off at the end, the seats for the wheel bolts I can trim out with a craft knife.

I am only spraying through the wheel face and won't be applying to the rear of the wheel.

Coat two, moderate colour change. Updating as I do, will return to fill in the details later

I already think I'm making a mess of it :)

Will be adding beer to the process, see how things improve.

Looking forward to an evening in with this thread

Looks a bit drippy.  Are you spraying in warm conditions?

Looks a bit drippy.  Are you spraying in warm conditions?

After first two coats I have cranked up the heating in the house and am making sure the cans are a shade warmer.

Current ambient is approx 18°c and rising :p

The drip is a concern, so is the paint running

Coat two improving as it dries

Some drips still showing but generally they all seem to be flatting out more or less ok.

Picture doesn't show the improvement as much

Please go and make little circles of tape and mask the wheel bolt seatings.

Shove some paper in if you like then some little circles of tape.

Then spray only lightly in that area.

I know you can run a Craft Knife carefully and remove the coating on the seating,

but best not to spray them, easier.

Maybe do more can shaking, do it for ages, then do some more.

Yep, looks like the trick is plenty of very light coats.  It might be worth warming the other wheels up with a hair dryer before you start spraying them.

Spray wheel flat on the floor

If you have a hair dryer, you could use it to warm the wheel during and after spraying.

You can also insert the wheel bolts and lock them in place with ty raps (behind the wheel).

It is very important to leave the seatings as they are. If there is a layer of paint on them, you could lose the bolts.

And if you want to remove the paint on a later date, be sure you apply lots of layers. The thicker the paint on the wheels, the better you can remove it.

That is a mistake lot of plasti dippers had after applying the dip too thin.

George, thanks for joining us, all advice very well received. Keep it coming

Light coats is the plan.

Other wheels will be tomorrow, this is a test, will warm them tomorrow.

Coal is on the fire and (for pizza) oven is on in the kitchen.

Most sources have claimed thats a no no. Just following t'internet :)

Don't want to come across as teaching grandma to such eggs but have you dipped the can in hot water for ten mins or so to compress the propellant more? Always stopped me dripping!

Going for eight coats, I'm aware of the issue, was going to remove before fitting on the car, currently looking for something to blank them though

They have been sat at safe proximity above a radiator on a shelf

Arm now about to fall off from can shaking :)

Oh and forgot to tape over loo roll, on it now

You can also use the bolts after dipping.

Just put them in and turn them (preferably with a power tool).

I would have put some bolts in the holes and, as written before, lock them in place on the back with ty raps or something similar. (before dipping)

is the wheel standing up ?

Gravity maybe your "run" enemy, lie her down !

Can in moderately hot water will also speed drying time up

Coat three just on wet there, lighting not aiding ipad photography.

Oh and apparently I can't even manage to cut circles in masking tape, does not bode well people

More shaking equalled better spraying that time

Sadly the bolts I have are holding my summer wheels in place.......on my car

Again, the Internet said do it like this, and who am I to disagree.

For anyone interested, check out Fonzi on dipyourcar youtube channel. Hero!

IMHO it is so because you can hold the can up straight. Then it sprays better and you get less drips from the can.

And if the layers are thin enough the paint wont run.
