is the 6 speed box stronger than the 5? and what do i need to fit to my car?

Featured Replies

Right  here goes...

My box went bang, bought a new one.. fit it to the car. Been driving slowly as  I've had the baby in the car ect.. But after going out on my own today, I notice the car aims for the kerb under acceleration (and I'm not talking torque steer here!!)

Drive to one wheel only by the look of it!!

Bugger.. just my sort of luck!

Question. I've been told the 6 speed box is stronger (as found in leons ect ect)

Is this true??

So I would need the 6 speed box, matching driveshafts, gear cables....

What else??

I've just fit a g60 flywheel and vr6 clutch to my car.. Can this be used in conjunction with   6 box and my starter motor ??

6 speed was fitted to the cupra r, s3 and tt as they have a k04 which is laggyer not because of power as far as I know

My friend has a Leon (not an lcr) same engine as ours ko3s turbo ect but has 6 speed ...

No! The 6 speed has a known issue where the gears fail. Speak to any gearbox reconditioning company. They see plenty of them, and no 5 speeds.

I just don't know if after only 1 week fitting a 5 speed box due to the old one suffering dif failure I now have to rip it back out again because of a very similar issue, to fit another 5 but for how long... :-(

My LCR 6sp has taken 370bhp all day long, all be it fully rebuilt with a diff!

I wouldn't hesitate to fit one again, given the chance!

What did you need to fit this mate?

Are you sure the drive shaft is in properly.

Didn't remove them mate. I removed the spline bolt and cable tied the shaft up out the way...

The driver side cup I did remove yes but the cup was put back in with the 5mm Alan bolt upon refitting..

I've had several VAG cars with 6 speed box's & never had a problem. Mkiv Golf 1.8T Anniversary shares the AUQ engine with the VRS & has 6 speed fitted as standard.

Wiil drop straight into a mk 1 VRS, but you'll need the drive shafts, linkage.

The 6 speed box is stronger as standard, as they don't suffer with the diff failures that the 5 speeds have (or atleast not as common).

As for your car pulling to the left now, mine suffered with that after a track day.

Took me months to sort it out and get to the bottom of it, and in the end it turned out to be a wheel alignment issue (more camber on 1 side than the other).

I had the wheel alignment done 3 times iirc before the problem went away, I don't know if it was a machine calibration issue or just the numpty on the spanners, but the camber was almost 2° on 1 side and only 0.5° on the other when I had it aligned the final time. Eventually settled at 1°18 minutes per side and my car drove straight again (but I do have adjustable top mounts fitted which makes it easier to make small camber tweaks).

Basically if it touches the gearbox it needs changing (6 speed conv) starter motor, gear linkage, drive shaft etc. My 6 speed 02m went bang but it did used to be fitted to a 700+ bhp monster

What did you need to fit this mate?

I didn't do it myself,J-Tech automotive did the swap!

Drive shafts (I used Q Drive ones!)

Starter motor

Gear linkage

Something else but I forget what it is........hmm?
