6 speed conversion

Featured Replies

My mate has sadly had his golf anni written off by a rear end shunt

Anyway he's gave ne first dibs on his Porsche brakes and his 6speed box and everything I need has any1,done this conversion is it easy and what's it intail

You also need the driveshafts, clutch and flywheel.I think you need the starter as well but I am not 100% sure

Sent from my GT-I9505 using tapatalk 4!

As above.. I've Been looking into a 6 box conversion myself..

i'm currently mid conversion on my budget build, As above, and you need the starter (flywheel ring gear is different size), I have a spare if your interested!

Also I needed the gearshift and cables..........

Do you also need some of the subframe / consoles too?  I know I had to do this when I did my fabia vRS 5 speed to 6 speed thing.

Bugger it! Steering hose too?! Grrrrrrr!!!!!

thats no biggie mate,,, a good second hand one from a breaker and new olive washers should see you right

On the 4x4 one of the gearbox bracket bolts was longer as well so make sure you get the bolts too

A lot of work just to change gear more often, from what i remember ratios are not that different between VRS 5spd and the 6spd box, unless you get diesel box

Unless going for big power and a diesel box, I fail to see the point. Whilst the acceleration gains might help in the higher gears, first gear is already way too much for the grip, in my opinion. Going for a 6 speed box will only make it even easier to spin, and go nowhere fast.

I think the final ratio is the same for both boxes lol, I am going for it as it's much stronger (no explody diff rivets) and I like the way the higher ratios fall regards corner exit power, I have a sharan 1.8t with the six speed, guess I just got used to it!

+1 it's about the strength :D

The 4x4 box is even worse than the VRS, think cream cheese. And your almost there. what's worse is because they are rarer they wanted lots for the, 2nd hand so when mine ate itself I got an S3 one with all the bits for a Lot less than a refurbished 4x4 one

I love my 6 speed box

:)

Are you sure the 6th gear ratio is the same as 5th on the 5 speed? I was going to do the conversion to bring the RPM down a touch for motorway cruising

You would need to check the ratios based on the gearbox code.  I know in my example, the 5th on a regular PD100 TDI is barely any higher than the 6th on the later Fabia vRS boxes, but I got an earlier one and there's a more dramatic difference.

Yes, as said the final drive is about the same. The only was to do that would be to drop a Diesel 6speed on, but you'd probably find the first 5 gears lacking power, unless you'd done some fairish engine mod work. This is one thing I haven't experimented on with the MkIV platform though, so I can't be sure how the diesel boxes perform on a standard-ish vRS. It is quite popular with the BIG power boys though.

I hate French but the gearbox in the ds3 is 6 speed and I can cruise on the motorway at 70 at only 2100rpm. Not looking for a massive drop but 400 or 500 rpm would make a world of difference. Meh, it's a long way off me doing it anyways, I'll look properly closer to the time

VAG use the diesel gears with the 225bhp TT roadster

It has a 5 spd O2M DXW

1st 42:11 = 3.818

2nd 40:19 = 2.105

3rd 39:29 = 1.345

4th 35:36 = 0.972

5th 32:33 = 0.970

The diesel final drive for the box is (paired to 90bhp 1.9 TDI's):

6th 29:26 = 0.806

This ratio setup works well whether on twisty roads or open motorways

Normal petrol 6spd gears are crippling short, imho

so is this the best gearbox to get ??

Probably not best tbh

If you want the 6th gear installed, you'd have to factor in the cost of the work

If you're thinking about converting for fuel economy reasons, then a version of this gearbox with the 6spd already installed would probably be cheapers overall

That would probably be found on a 130/150hp TFI 4mtion Golf

be cheaper to buy a more eco car?

the 5 speed isn't that weak, granted not as strong as the 6 speed but only needed with big power.  wouldn't it be better going for an LSD?

lots of hassle for no real gain on a low tuned car.

the 210 /225 bhp cars were fitted with the 6 speed box due to the bigger turbo and slower spool so a need for higher RPM's hence the more gears.

putting a diesel box in is also not much good as they are significantly lower rpm.

my octy was up around 3k at 70 and my fabia is just over 2k -2.3 but at that rpm in the vrs there is no power really.  you would ruin the drive of the car and be forever changing gears.

I drove the VW Eos with 6 speed manual and 2.0 FSI engine, but guess what....6th gear is shorter than my 5th gear with 10km/h !!  :giggle: :giggle:

probably defineately

On the LSD front there are very few options on the 02J 4x4 boxes (SQS plate)

The 02M 4x4 boxes have diffs avaialable from Peloquin, Quaife, Wavetrac, Kaaz, etc

my experience is exactly the oppposite of this

eg

6spd short ratio petrol = forever changing gears, running out of gear speed way before engine rpm

6spd long-ratio diesel = gear speed range and engine rpm working together

I found this driving at any speed

Not really an issue of engine power

Original 6 speed box in my 130bhp late Mk1 estate is great! Just ticking over at 70mph with bags of torque. Gear change never felt quite so precise as my previous 5 speed though.
