Faulty Indicator Stalk?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on my VRS' dilema.

My other half uses the Occy as our family car and she mentioned to me yesterday that the indicators are flashing irregularly when prompted.

So me working in the trade thought that a bulb must be out - So out I go to the car and check them - Hmmm all are working fine! Cycled through the Left and Right turn prompts, then the hazzards - All seemed fine. However when checking them for a second time, the turn signal prompts started to misbehave! Random clicking/flashing etc..... on Both Left and Right Prompts.

Put the Hazzards back on and all worked well again. Cycled through the the prompts via the stalks and a couple of hic ups again :/ Hmmm I wonder what happens when I turn the lights on and then indicate - Well this made the matter(s) worse! However if only using the Hazzard switch all is good and well.

So my question to you guys is, do you lot think its the indicator stalk causing the issue(s) rather than a wiring fault? I can make the problem better or worse by physically holding the stalk in different positions.

I just found this to be rather random.

Any feedback from you guys will be great!

Cheers

Adam

Put on a high electrical load such as lights etc with the ignition on and engine off to see if the problem is worse.

This is the same problem I had which mainly occurred when stopped in traffic at night. Replaced the hazard flasher (which doubles as the indicator flasher) and problem solved. My battery was about a year away from end of life which probably allowed the volts to dip a bit.

If not, there are posts on here that tell you how to squirt contact cleaner onto the indicator contacts.

Ah brill cheers guys - Didn't want to over conplicate the issue if not neccessary. I'll give contact cleaner a go first then replace the hazzard switch if no joy :)

More than likely to be the stalk.  Mine did this a few years ago.  A blast of switch cleaner cured it until a month or so ago, when it refused to do the left turns unless I clicked it down and then pressed on it.

yeah, had a similar stalk issue before christmas with headlight aspect of the switch... push forward - nothing.

push forward then push the stalk in towards the steering column - lights.

loads of contact cleaner, and a good wiggle sorted it out.
