Switched live out of glovebox?

Featured Replies

I've got a dashcam and it is fixed to the windscreen but with the power temporarily into the 12v socket in between the front seats, i.e. wires everywhere!  Is there a 12v switched live in the glovebox it could be permanently fix to?

For info the camera is the E-prance 0801.

Think mine is on a piggy back fuse to the rear wiper which is fuse 47. You could use the 12v socket fuse which is number 40, but in my Mk2 it didn't work all the time which is why I used the rear wiper and just continued with the same on Mk3.

That was the way it was done on the Mk2. Sworrall has a post on "how to" in the Mk2 forum. However with the fusebox on the other side in the Mk3 I've ran the wire from the camera down the nearside A pillar into the fusebox. There is enough space in the fusebox to put the adapter and then connect the camera. The adapter is connected via a piggy back fuse into one of the vehicle fuses as described above. The wire from the camera is easily hidden in the roof lining and A pillar using a credit card (or similar) to push it in.

Did you manage to hide the wire away all the way? I seem to recall that there was an issue at the base of the windscreen transferring to the side of the dashboard.

You are correct, that's how I ran it on my Mk2. However on my Mk3 I ran it down the outside of the pillar under the rubber door seal.

Also done it this way after trying to go down the windscreen side and failing and works a treat. I did mine via the drivers side though as I wanted to add an extra set of 12v sockets with USB ports to charge phone (I have 2 so the extra socket is nice to have plus if Mrs is in car) and potentially run a lead to the rear seats if ever needed, such as if I buy a camera for the rear as well. Running the wire required loosening the plastic trim around the centre console near the footwells to get a gap enough to feed things through.

There is a 15A fuse lower middle of the fusebox for the rear wiper; just pop a piggy back fuse in there.

OK, ordered a piggy back fuse and a 12v socket.

I assume I just put the live onto the piggyback connection but is there a convienient earth?  I haven't been out to look yet.

Also should I wrap up the socket and camera connector to stop it coming apart or will it get too hot?

Heatwise you should be fine; a bit of electrical tape around the connector won't hurt.

For an earth I just used a crimp set to connect a wire to a bolt on the bulk head. When you pop off the end-panel on the dash there are a few bolts visible for use; just untighten enough to get the wire or crimp part in and then tighten backup. I also used bullet connectors between both live and earth connections into the 12v socket as well incase of any issues later. Just make sure you get them the right way around or you'll blow the fuses.

Good luck.

Hi Guys

Using the wiper fuse for a switched power supply, is fuse a standard fuse or a mini fuse??

Many thanks

Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow!  I have ordered the standard one.

It's a standard fuse. 15A if I remember right. There's a guide on Briskoda by Fubar or someone about installing a 12v socket with photos. For an Occy2 but still relevant bar the different fuse box location and the diagram in the handbook is actually correct this time!
