clutch life after remap. vrs cr

Featured Replies

Was givin it some beans from the.lights before and im sure my clutch slipped. Did have some new trainers on so could have ridden the clutch a little. Whats the clutch life on a remapped cr?

the clutch can last the life of the car its how you drive the car if u givi it the beans slipping it of the lights etc it wont last long at all. its all about how u drive etc

Not entirely true. Clutches are rated to certain power/torque figures. Yes, driving carefully can prolong their life but as soon as I went to stage 2, my clutch began to slip when accelerating in 4-6th gear. The torque low down the rev range simply overwhelmed the clutch.

Many people, including myself, have upgraded their clutch to handle the extra torque.

Having said all that, I would have thought that the standard clutch would be ok with a stage 1 CR.

i've had my pd170 remapped to a rated 200bhp, 300ft/lb. Its starting to slip on acceleration if I floor it in most gears.

My guess its a mix of the clutch being a bit worn plus the extra torque its having to put up with meaning it cant fully cope with it.

What would people suggest as an upgrade to the oem clutch or would an oem clutch be fine for that power if it was new?

I had a upgraded clutch on my fabia when i had it mapped. I was under the impression my octavia wouldnt need one. Hope it doesnt start playing up or it will take the fun out the map

My diesel Octy VRS has covered 110,000miles on factory clutch and had it mapped for a couple of weeks now. 420nm torque and 210bhp no problems ( yet )

Stage 1 should be fine. Only push it hard when your foot has fully come off the clutch. Not from stationary!

I think the torque and power with a remap are still within what the standard clutch can handle.

So as above it comes down to how it's driven. If you let it slip when setting off a lot then it's going to reduce the life just like without a remap.

Depends on the power and torque delivery of the map, plus for a 2nd hand car how the car's been driven and how the clutch has been treated.

Not sure how its been treated but i know the previous owner had a caravan so the clutch might be a bit more worn than a normal 84k old clutch.

So, the general opinion is that the oem clutch will cope with 300ft/lb torque?

Yes, with a good quality map.

Thats what darkside just told me too although they said it was at the top end of its limit.

They showed me the oem and the upgrade kits, the price difference was huge lol

300 isn't at the top limit I wouldn't say. I've been running around 320lb/ft with Shark mapping on the standard clutch for 3yrs. Absolutely no slip.

Then you are lucky, or my shark map is really hot. 35k and it started slipping in 5th and 6th at 3k. It does it in 4th now at WOT, most of those 35k miles in 14 months are on the M way at a constant 75 ish.

Shark's PD140 hybrid map was developed with my car, so that might help things as my aim was driveability and reliability from the car, definitely NOT headline BHP and torque figures. Plus you're also running a petrol TFSI are you not, so different mapping again.

Perhaps the standard TDI clutches stand up better to remapped power & torque?

So far darkside said i need an upgrade, but people on here with similar maps and the place which did the map (avon tuning, thornbury) said id be fine with an oem clutch.

Im starting to think oem would be fine, certainly better onthe wallet lol

I'd only consider the upgrade if you were pushing onto Stage 2 levels of performance. As I say, I've had zero trouble and that's about 40k miles now.

not alwsys needed. My fabia covered 90k remapped miles on the standard clutch and only at the end of it's life with me did it start to slip. It had done numerous track days, The Ring and pod lauches.

It is as someone correctly put above its all about how you drive it. Drive it like a tool and a standard car can have its clutch killed.

I think if you want to increase further and do alot of heavy lauches and push the car then yes you might need it. But I would suggest run with the standard clutch and wait unti it does start to wear out.

Yep. My 06 tfsi vrs also had a shark map and it was fine up to 85k when I sold it.

The map is the critical link in the chain really.

As I had a PD130 ASZ Ibiza that I ran - 180bhp and was mapped when I bought it, never did find out who by! On a familiar hill near me, dual carriageway off a roundabout it would slip in 5th if you were trying to press on, and it required a drop to 4th.

All my other mapped Fabias (3 of them) with similar power outputs, but mapped by known good quality tuners - same engine, different map - no slip on the same stretch.

What's the worst case scenario of getting the map and not upgrading the clutch... it's a replacement clutch at a later date, so you're no worse off! Clutches do wear over time regardless, so if I were in your shoes I'd get the remap done now, see how you get on and replace the clutch when it tells you it needs to be replaced. That could be next week, or in years.

The map was done last year, its slipping atm and slowly getting worse. Obviously this is it wearing but i was asking if a new oem clutch would take the power
