What boys will I need with the genuine kit? The timing belt kit then the seperate water pump?

Personally I'd buy a Gates belt kit with a genuine water pump, the best of both worlds.

Gates make belts for the genuine kits aswell as the non-genuine kits.

This. Also it's £70ish for a Gates kit and £93ish for a VAG branded kit (BLT engine), a genuine pump would need adding to both but surely on something that will last the distance/years a timing belt will then even if you did choose to go genuine you can't get that excited over £23?

Silly question, does the water pump have the same issues as other VAG cars, the impeller disintegrating? which kit would have a metal impeller?

Most sensible option would be a genuine belt / pulley kit (£100 ish), then go to a motor factor and get a deal on a metal impeller pump (£40 ish).  Then never worry about changing the pump again...

I'm not sure I'd use a metal impeller pump myself as they are all non genuine and if it ever breaks will probably be more likely to jam than a genuine plastic impeller pump.

This is the correct answer, the plastic impeller is designed to break off if it jams rather than snapping the cambelt and wrecking the whole engine.

Trying to pump debris from a broken plastic component like the thermostat, thermostat housing, ECT sensor housing etc.

 Then never worry about changing the pump again...

Impellor material does not make the pump fit and forget!

It would still need replacing with the cambelt, as it's the bearings that wear and putting a new/higher tension belt onto a used/old pump is what properly knackers them and causes them to leak :)

I won't be leaving my metal impeller pump on forever, but I will be changing it every other cam belt.  This suits me due to the high mileage I cover in such a short time.

 

The point I'm trying to make it that it's a pump.  Whether it be a metal or plastic impeller really makes little odds if you regularly maintain your engine, so reducing the likely hood of a failure.
