Mid life crisis?

Featured Replies

In the process of buying an Octavia and have narrowed it down to two - both 08 reg.

One is a diesel automatic (DSG) with 49000 miles with service history in very good condition.

The second one is a Vrs with 130000 miles and patchy service history. My wife thinks the automatic would be a much better buy but the vrs is a beautiful car but is it liable to work out very expensive?. Both are in and around the same asking price 10000 euro.

I don't much about the vrs's are they much harder on fuel and what is there to look out for?

While I know the lower mileage automatic would probably be the much safer option I am seriously tempted

to go for the vrs. Any advice?

The vRS also diesel? The DSG is that 2.0 Diesel 140? My vRS is a 2.0CR DSG and returns on overal average about 45-46ish.

What sort of driving will you be doing, if its lo mileage then maybe a diesel is not the best option.

Personally I'd go for full service history.

Thank you for the prompt response. Both cars are diesel and I prefer diesel. I would do about 18000 miles a year

Personally wouldn't buy a car with 130k on it. Especially if it had patchy history.

18k miles a year is a lot of gear changes, I find the DSG with the sports mode ideal as you can use it as a semi auto when you feel the need to go manual, personally once I'd got over the novelty I now only use the auto mode.

My 2ltr 140 will return at 70mph 50+mpg on motorways/duel carriageways providing you don't hammer the exceleration/turbo.

I think the OP is refering to going for the sporty model rather than the sensible choice.

For me it would be the 49k and non vRS as it sounds the better deal to me.

My wife thinks I'm going through a mid life crisis by choosing the flashy, far more risky option!

Is the vrs a pd or cr as if it is a pd the non vrs will be a better choice as pd vrs has a dpf

Leave the vRS well alone...10k euros is quite alot of money for any 08 vRS never mind one with 130k miles.

If its a PD vRS they are quite infamous for injector and DPF related foibles, I avoided an 08 Leon FR with only 27k miles not v long ago because of this, tragedy as it was a lovely lovely car just didnt much fancy experiencing a world of pain with it. It at that age highly unlikely to be a CR.

Recommend buying the other car or putting a bit more money towards a newer, lower mileage CR engined vRS

Tbf id say both are over priced. 10k, even if it is euros, is a lot for a 6 year old car. At 6 years old i bought my vrs for 7k and its loaded with optional extras.

Vrs diesels of that age etc in the uk go for around 5-6k atm

The vrs is a pd .Appreciate all the advice I got here. Looks like I will be going with the DSG.

The vrs was a gorgeous looking car and wonderful to drive but I would be terrified of the massive bills

that could be lurking just around the corner.!

PDs may well do but CRs wont.

Can a mid life crisis involve a diesel car.  :giggle:

i did say of that age

A 2.0 Diesel Octavia "Vrs" is not a mid life crisis "flashy" car. I have the 2.0 PD Vrs and it does 40+ round town and 50 + on the motorway. It's 170 horse and it has "sporty " styling. These cars are not performance cars (unless rediculously tuned). I came to the Vrs from an RS6 , I was getting 11 mpg round town , 20 on the motorway , it was a ticking time bomb of suspension and gearbox issues. Go for the Vrs because it looks better and has more "street cred" will go faster as well. I bought mine with 124k on it and apart from a cheeky DPF light (always cleared with a blast ) had been excellent.

It can't be a mid life crisis if your thinking about it LOL
