Fuel consumption the best and the worst.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

What's the best mileage you've got running the tank from full to empty rather than using the PID as we all know it's not 100% accurate.

The best I've had is 593 miles and was to chicken to go any futher even though I had another 0.75 litres left.

I have no idea, because I wouldn't want to risk any chance of any debris or gunk at the bottom of the tank being sucked into the engine, or running out of fuel.

In terms of best mpg, I track it with fuelly.com - 63.0mpg on my latest fill. I only hit the 60mpg barrier after around 2000 miles. I think the 50 limit on my local motorway, which is 85% of my daily journey, is helping with consumption. Obviously warm weather also helps.

One of the less constructive topics I've seem on here, in my humble opinion.

Who on earth is going to admit to trying to, deliberately, wring the last drop of fuel from their tank before it runs out?

Why would you?

Irrespective of whether or not  there's the possibility of crap being sucked into whatever I can't imagine why you would want to make an distinct effort to get anywhere near that point in the first place.  What if the petrol station you were banking on being open - wasn't?  What if you realise  you'd forgotten your wallet when you got there?  A dozen "what if's" could be brought to mind.

I suppose there's mileage in a thread seeking experiences where you've come close to running out of fuel and escaped by the skin of your teeth - for whatever reason - but that doesn't seem to be the drift of this particular thread.

Actually, after typing all the above, I now realize it's a wind up and I've just wasted five minutes of my life...oh well, never mind. Such is life.

That means you had around 3.6 l/100km (78.7mpg). Are you sure you didn't get out and push for a lot of your journeys?

mmm... yeah, I got swmbo's trip output to read 2.5l/100km the other day - 25mph in 5th, down hill... barely off the tick over...

Sadly not as the petrol tank holds 37 litres and rather than pushing I've made holes for the feet in the floor plan. ;)

I am still laughing out loud......

Do you fill your tank with debris and gunk?

And on a new car I'd hope that there wasn't much gunk or rubbish in the tank!

daughter just got 75mpg out of her 14 reg 60ps citigo on run from kent to devon, according to gauge only used 1/4 tank

Fuel pump needs fuel for cooling. Don't drive as far your tank is almost empty.

79 mpg was my best so far but that was straight off the PID.Im not too bothered as I don't let the tank go near empty. It's so cheap to fill up :)

Sent from my PID using Tapatalk

The best I've got from a tank is 59mpg and the worst is 49mpg.

Just came back from loch ness 71.2 MPG

24mpg, according to PID.

That was sitting outside waiting for it to demist, then driving the 1 mile to the petrol station  :bandit:

SWMBO's is averaging about 40mpg which isn't bad considering most of her journeys are only a mile or two.  Will just hit 2000 miles this week - not bad in 18 months!

Best I ever got according to PID was 84mpg that was about 10miles nice and sunny weather if that makes any difference and I had about 9000 on the clock and I think it was Esso fuel :)

Oh and worse was around 40 for a very short lazy journey about a mile maybe 2

403 miles from a full tank....

49 mpg, 3.5 hours & average speed 67 mph.....

Not accurate, but it's better then my diesels :) My PID has packed up, new one this week yay. Most of my journeys at the moment are <40 mph roads around Sheffield, so I should be getting close to worst award :)

You don't need to mpg real tests on near empty. Although it's handy to know how far you can go beyond. I remember getting to 0 miles on an old 1.4 citroen bx in the mountains & hills of Wales. I was 10m from a fuel station. That needed some creativity as most everything was hydraulic, although not the steering lol...
