tweenster's S2000

Featured Replies

Lets hope it is the latest one as has been getting done in Australia.

But then if they are doing it, i take it they are accepting it is an oil user.

Personally if it has a Oil Crank Seal Failure & is an Oil User,

once they do the Oil Seal it should have a properly carried out Oil Consumption Test,

and its maybe time for a Replacement Engine.

Anyway, as long as they start the work, it does not matter if the Warranty then Expires,

Skoda need to repair the car properly, and they know well the issues among the CAVE engines built from 2009-2012.

Their Design, Manufacturing, Materials, parts, quality control or engine management faults, so they should have done a Service Campaign 2 years ago, or a recall and done the Modification Updates, so they stay responsible as long as these cars are serviced to the VW Service Schedule / Guidelines.

See Crankshaft Bearing Play.

Maybe they need to address that now not with just an Crank Oil Seal, even Squirters.

Engine Replacement.

???

How many miles has your engine covered, and when was it first registered?

  • Guys, there are enough oil threads already where you can continue this discussion, I really don't want this to become another, especially as I don't have any oil consumption issues.

  • Sneak preview of the new car; only managed to drive the 10 miles or so home today as I was working. And yes, I do need to tidy the garage!

Once the oil seal is done they will be doing an oil consumption test.

The car is a 2011 CAVE with 29,000 miles on it.

Sigh ...

Mrs T's Fabia went into the garage last Friday, 27 March, with an expectancy that the oil leak would be fixed and the oil weighed and put in to start the oil consumption test by Wednesday this week. I had a phone call this afternoon from a very nice lady at Skoda customer service who gave me the bad news that work had yet to start on my car because the warranty company (official Skoda extended warranty) had not yet approved the work to go ahead. Without prompting she stated that this was taking far too long and it should have been completed by now. I called into the garage later this afternoon as I just happened to be passing and, funny old thing, the warranty work had been approved late this afternoon. However, still no estimate of when the car will be fixed! With the lengthy Easter break about to start I doubt we will see the car for another week. Mrs T is, unsurprisingly, most unhappy.

It is a surprise they are Approving the work since it is a 'known issue',  and in other cases 'Known Issues' are rejected.

but then being a 'Skoda Approved Extended Warranty', they knew the known issues.

They could just cut to the chase, because actually the knowledge they have and VW / Skoda has tells them just to get

an Engine Ordered up now, rather than trying to fix something that will need replaced later anyway.

Sorry, didn't make it clear, the warranty work is fixing the crankshaft oil seal. Apparently it's quite a large job???

But yes, I see your point.

It is, and will only be a sticking plaster on a much bigger problem.

Because the cause is still there.

So Labour and parts, and courtesy car and some idea of keeping costs down will still cost them more in the long run,

because the work has to be covered by warranty.

As long as you keep records, and you know what happened.

If they need an engine replaced later. £1,500 bill now, only less if they get away without Bearings ect replaced, but its a worn engine,

& £4,500 later down the line to Car Care Plan ltd if a new Base Engine is required.

Update.

The car has now been in the garage for 2 weeks and Mrs T is seriously unhappy. The oil consumption test has been completed, the data sent to Skoda and the garage are waiting for their analysis and direction. The crankshaft oil seal has not been replaced as Skoda did not want to spend time, effort and money on replacing the seal if the oil consumption test identified that this work would be nugatory.

Mrs T is getting a DSG equipped Roomster as a courtesy car tomorrow; should be interesting.

A VW Polo GTI gets more appealing every day.

Update.

Well she's back home again. First part of the oil consumption test at the garage has been done and the car is home for 300km of 'normal' running. It is booked back into the dealer for 24 Apr 15 and we will hopefully have the answer later that day; we shall see.

186 Miles is a ridiculously short test if they intend Weighing the oil and then multiplying what was used to get a figure for oil used in 1000km / 621 miles.

If that is just a Start where they will drop the oil & weigh it, then put back in and see what it uses over 2 or 3 tanks of fuel fair enough.

Be sure to ask them for the Weight of Oil drained at the start and finish of the test.

Another update...

Car had done a little over 200 miles when it went back in for its consumption check this morning; results showed no discernible oil consumption. They will now keep the car to replace the crankshaft oil seal and the dealer has asked Skoda what mods should be fitted (breather pipe and/or any of the others that might be out there). Hopefully we will get the car back Tuesday next week.

I did check the oil during the test. Interestingly, whether the engine was hot or cold the level was above the hatched area, you know, the one the manual says "Do not fill above this line". I asked the Service Manager about this and he said he would speak to the technician about it. I will quiz him again when I collect the car and also check the oil level before leaving the garage.

What line are you looking at not filling above, because the Diagram is not clear. ?

Hot i have the oil at the top of the cross hatch are,

and Stone Cold just below the top orange marker.

I was quoting from memory, I've never seen it above the hatched area before let alone up to the top Orange marker, which is where it was. But from your post that appears to be ok, so I shall relax now.

Quick update - we still haven't got the car back yet. Mrs T is seriously unhappy. It is currently being put back together after having the crankshaft oil seal replaced; should get it back Wednesday. Possibly.

Update - Yay - the car is back home! I will be monitoring the oil situation even more closely than usual over the next few weeks and will fill it up with a little more oil than I had been doing.

Nice to have the beast home again.

Good luck! (:

Mrs T over the moon to have her car back.

Thinking about changing the stock shocks/dampers for Bilstein B8s next.

Got to drive the Fabia for a few miles yesterday, really enjoyed it. It's been a while but I had forgotten just how hard it can punch out of corners.

Gave the car a wash today and took her for a spin around the block for a systems check and to dry her off (OK it was an excuse to drive her!). Interestingly, since the oil check work the overall fuel consumption appears to have improved and is showing over 38mpg despite Mrs T's daily commute through Lincoln. Very pleased with that. It is still using a little oil but I can live with that.

Blimey, 7 months since I updated this thread!

Car has been used for general driving duties and Mrs T uses it to commute one week in 3. Today we filled the boot with breeze blocks and I'm sure I heard her groan!

MOT today (well yesterday now!); 5 years old, 39000 miles and the only advisory was the chip in the windscreen - it's been repaired but it still gets noted. Getting around 40mpg on the commute but that drops fairly swiftly when you use the performance.

Needs a good clean and polish and the wheels could do with some TLC.

I spent over 6 hours in the car today collecting our boys from Uni for Easter. I really enjoy the extra performance after commuting in the Citigo, but its also as docile as a docile thing when you are stuck in a queue of traffic, but soon picks up her skirts when you need to overtake. Averaged just under 40 mpg at 56 mph for the whole trip which I was quite pleased with. The car needs a serious clean now.

I did notice you on Monday, did wave but not sure if you saw me!

I don't get much time to update this thread as I am massively busy renovating our house. But in preparation for our road trip to Norwich later this week to see our son graduate from Uni (he got a 1st class Masters degree in Biological Medicinal Chemistry if you are interested!) I gave her a clean and she does scrub up quite well:

20160717_151833_zpszqwvuz3k.jpg

She will reach 45,000 miles (on an 11 plate) on our trip to Norwich and is still on the original CAVE engine. Yes, she does use oil but it is not a worrying amount and I just attribute the cost of the oil to 'running expenses'. Mrs T still loves it and that is all that counts; hopefully it will last another 3 years until I retire and we can go down to just one car (or maybe one sensible car and a 'toy'!). Until then...

I haven't posted on this thread for a while because I have hardly driven the car. But today I used Mrs T's car for my daily commute (as my Fabia Estate has a screw in the tyre) and was very pleasantly surprised that it returned 47.3mpg on my 23 mile commute home.

Also, earlier this week I found that the passenger seat has similar (but not as severe) burn marks from the heated seat element. I have emailed Skoda and am waiting for a reply.
