Anyone know anything about Ford PowerShift Gearboxes?

Featured Replies

We needed a bigger car for the Mrs after the birth of our second son and after picking up my O3 vRS TDI DSG she wanted an auto.  To cut a long story short we found one in a local car supermarket.  2009 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0TDCI PowerShift with all the options (full leather, sat-nav, xenons, etc). 60k and full Ford service history.

Having driven the car over the weekend I think there is an issue with the gearbox.  At about 80mph (on a private road) I tried to accelerate and the revs seemed to fluctuate (go up and come back down repeatedly) without the car getting any quicker.  I'm also convinced that it slips under hardish acceleration.  I have booked it into a local garage for them to have a look and I have also made the "dealer" aware, although I am waiting for a call back.

Anyone work(ed) for Ford and know about issues with this box, or anyone had one and had issues?

I'm hoping it is as simple as changing the oil and filter but a quick Google revealed it may need an new controller and prices quoted were in excess of £1,400.  I just want so info to give back to the dealer.

Many thanks in advance.

I have a friend who bought one a couple of years back. No problems with it and very happy.

It looks like it's a very similar gearbox to the DSG.

Basically dual clutch 6 speed. The clutches are lubricated with oil.

So sounds like there is a fault with the hydraulic system, the controller or the clucthes.

I'm sure the dealer should know a bit more once they have done a diagnostic check.

A Ford Dealer might,

a car Super Market really will not give a monkeys.

The Ford Dealership would not give a monkeys, but then they will be unlikely to have a 5 year old one for sale.

I have tried a couple and really liked them, but they were near new ones.

If it feels like box is slipping then it sounds quiet teminal,

Powershift boxes are ment to have oil and filter changed every 4 years or 50k service,

Has it ever been done???

This is something I need to check.  It has a full Ford history so should have been done recently.

Looking on the net they slip when they need a service, so I can only assume it hasn't been done.  I'll get the dealer to do it, I'm jiust concerned it may have cause other damage.

UPDATE: my independant has looked at it and said the gearbox oil is "overfull" and it is much better now t's at the correct level.  Could this have caused any damage?  It works like the VAG 6spd DSG box.

I wouldn't have thought it would cause any damage.

I know the DSG works by having oil pumped onto the clutches but they're not fully submersed I don't think.

Having it overfilled may have caused the clutches to be 'swimming' in oil and so to slip.

Completely guessing here but this seems likely to me. Did you ask the garage if this could cause any problems?

It could do. What Phil-E says about the clutches is correct, but I'd be more concerned about oil being churned and hence aeriated by the gears turning.

Thanks for posting this topic, I'm considering a Powershift Fordfor my next car.

I have a Mondeo with DSG and the oil change is at 3 years/36,000 miles. Expensive at over £200 a time!
