steering leak

Featured Replies

Identified my steering leak, car was up on ramps and mechanic said as my nearside steering rack boot is damaged and not held on correctly. Mechanic said replacing the boots will solve the leak.

This true?

No. The boot is to keep dirt out not keep oil in.

Happened to me. Only solution: refurb rack or new rack.

You can get them for around £150. I paid a bit more and went with ECP. Product was new as far as I could tell.

I thought about used off of eBay but for not much more I could get a refurb or new with warranty. Considering the labour involved, paying a little more to begin with made sense as opposed to buying used, saving £75 but finding it needs replacing a year down the line

mine went the other month had to top the fluid up every few weeks done my head in

Cheers for the reply guys, aye it is rubbish likes, now my cars on 160k it seems everything wants to fail apart from the engine

You cannot repair the seals in the rack so its new / recon rack time

Cost is insignificant relative to miles done, if it's £400 all in over 160k then it cost you 0.0025 pence per mile. Now I feel your pain having just done a wheel bearing that ran to a new drive drive shaft, bearing/hub, outer hub, splash guard, drop links, track rod/end, ball joint, dog bone bush, discs/pads and wipers. Irony is it'd have gone through an MOT as it was but I'm picky. Add in a few hundred in tools (gen2 kit etc) and it's fair to say the job wasn't cheap but it'll be the last time any of the above get done for many years (hopefully).

, dog bone bush,

Oi, you got that for nowt. Well, excluding postage

Very true, you are the reason my total car spend this month (6 months RFL, MOT, parts, fuel) is £790.24 so far and not £800+ :D

Irony: 2 months after posting the above i'm confronted with the same fault, £180 in parts at cost, plus time and it'll be done on stands :( My car did pick the day both the car and bike insurance were due to do this to me so i'm calling that a low blow  :D On the up side I have looked at what else is about in the sort of price bracket to replace the whole car and decided i'm probably better off sticking with the furby.
