Anything to watch out for?

Featured Replies

Going to look at 2 used Superbs over the weekend.

Both 2012 diesel, both manual and with between 80 and 105k.  Ones ex fleet, I think the other was a taxi.

Anything I should watch out for?

Hi

2012 so should still be covered by the 3 year warranty, so peace of mind there

Not sure if the taxi one will though?

Best of luck

Not with that mileage 3 years or 60,000 miles.

Might still be in the 2 year 100,000 mile period if you are lucky.

I would want a good service history for starters.

Do the usual check on the body and trim.

Check the wear on the tyres.

If in doubt then get an inspection done or walk away.

I thought the warranty was 2 years unlimited mileage (Škoda) and the 3rd year was limited to 60K (covered by Škoda UK) so you may still have a bit of warranty left.

Check the service history and ideally confirm the mileage with VCDS.

Personally I would not buy an ex taxi, but if the fleet car has been looked after and serviced on time it could be a bargain.

Both getting close to cambelt change (110k miles) and one is obviously pretty much at that point so a big one to check for.  Nothing major if they have been looked after but as the others have said the obvious wear and tyres etc.  FSH is a must.  I'd be checking the clutch / flywheel especially on the taxi.

140 or 170?  Both are CR anyway.

Thanks all. Didn't consider cambelt, for some reason I thought it was a chain.

The 105k is a 140 ex fleet and the other at 83k odd is a 170 ex taxi.

I only do about 8000 a year, but looking for something that'll be able to keep for 3 years without too many headaches.

Guessing they'll have been long life serviced which is my only concern providing full Skoda history. I'm not convinced that it doesn't do any damage keeping oil that long.

Assuming both tick all the boxes, which is the better engine?

Will try and get some history from the owners.

Only concern is the split boot. I've heard that they can fail and be very expensive to fix?

For the mileage you are doing I am sure a 140 would be fine.  The difference IMO is that extra bit of push when overtaking which I use because I do high mileage, but aside from that they are both good engines and not a whole difference in fuel economy.  I'll put it this way, if its a choice between a well looked after 140 and a 170 that you are not so sure about then I'd go for the 140.  The extra power is nice but I am sure reliability and running costs are a bigger factor when looking a car a few years old.

There are occasional issues with the boot but AFAIK nothing that is very common.

The ex fleet might not be a bad option if it has been serviced correctly which they normally are and is an advantage of a fleet car.  On the other hand people with fleet cars can take the view that it is not their own and may not show the same attention to it (not trying to insult fleet drivers in any way of course and there are a few on here that take great car of their cars!)   Have you seen anything else?

Think your right on the 2 year unlimited. I just got it confused as I usually change company cars at 100k which is usually 2 years.

Don't worry it will be fine.

I am now on my 5th Skoda and all have been on Variable service and the intervals have been anywhere between 17-30,000 miles and I have never had a problem.

I do around 50k a year.

Well what a ****e day.

Ex fleet was a wreck, interior looked like world war had taken place. Drove like a bag of bolts as well.

Taxi was well looked after, but went for a coffee to mull it over. Came back to find it sold to someone that viewed it last week.

To top off a wasted day and £15 of fuel, Darren decided to use a HGV trailer to stop his Corsa ****ing the front end.

Off to the drawing board over a Pinot :(

Keep you chin up Rob, there are bound to be plenty of sheds about, but on the flip side when you find a good one you will love it.

Just an update.  Been to see a late 61 plate Elegance today, and done a deal.

2.0 TDI (140 IIRC), 62K, 2 owners, full dealer history, bluetooth and satnav and 9 months tax and MOT.  Picking up for the long weekend.

Can anyone tell me what was standard on a late 61 reg Elegance?

Well done!  Mileage seems a bit on the high side for 2012 model but you have a FSH and with your average annual mileage it should even out after a few years.  Spec shouldn't have changed too much in the elegance models since the Superb II was launched so you should have leather/heated seats, bi-xenon and adaptive headlights (best feature IMO), sat nav, park assist, self park, cruise, electric/memory seats etc etc.  Basically everything you need and more, just check that all the electrics work of course which I'm sure you've done already.  Very little difference in pre and post FL models in terms of spec.

It should be a common rail engine as well (all 140s should be at that stage) so nice and smooth power delivery. Is it hatch/combi and manual/DSG?

Good luck with it!

Congratulations!

Park Assist was never std on an Elegance.

Columbus (sat nav) and Bluetooth are also std though.

I own a November 2011 built '61-plate Superb Elegance Estate with the 140PS Engine, DSG, and a panoramic roof so should be able to answer any questions regarding this model. I also have the brochure and handbooks .pdf files from Nov 2011 (if only I can find out how to upload them!).

Park Assist was never std on an Elegance.

Sorry I forgot that its not on the UK spec.  Here in Ireland it was always standard.  We get park assist, heated rear seats and all round parking sensors as standard from elegance upwards but then again we do end up paying more for our cars!

Dont forget the auto dim mirrors

I'd happily swap the few extras we get for a lower VRT rate!!
