Should you replace front drop links in pairs

Featured Replies

My car passed its MOT but was advised on slight play in the nearside front anti roll bar linkage, You can hear it knock when you go over bumps and I have booked this in to get done but would I be better getting both sides done or is it ok just to do the one.

Thanks.

doing one's fine

Even at its worst (grind the old ones off), its a simple job.

I'd change both for the cost.

As above post, change both. Chances are the other side wont be far away from 'going' either.

Getting both sides done on Thursday £110 for the two - Surprised it passed as you can hear it knocking I was certain it would fail, Anyhow they are getting done so its something less to go wrong.

Brother in Law is going to fit them after I managed to get both drop links for £27 but not sure if I have more drop links - I have attached a picture the ones that I purchased are the ones in the big white circle but then I notice something else that looks like another roll bar link at the top right of the picture.

Here is the link to the picture:

The small drop link is wobbly im not sure if you should be able to move these as both sides are the same and can be moved with your hand. Any way I just wanted some clarification as I hope I have got the correct ones.

Got a pair for my vrs to do this weekend, £40 or so for two genuine ones.

I'd always replace in pairs - as said above the other one won't be far behind!

Well if it's the roll bar drop link that's an advisory then you've got the right parts.

£110 to supply and fit 2 drop links

Undo and redo 4 nuts!

Jesus thank christ i do the work on my own car

Least it looks like i got the right parts, should you be able to move the roll bar link with your hand if you give it a wiggle.

I thought the £110 price was a bit expensive also, don't understand.

Is there any tension in the roll bar once its removed and if so should it be fairly easy to get the roll bar drop links lined up with the anti rollbar.

My brother in law is doing this tomorrow, just thought to ask if there is anything imparticular to be aware of when changing.

Make sure you jack both sides up at the same time as the roll bar connects to both front shocks so you need to raise both front corners so your not flexing the arb and making things hard for yourself

And after that its pretty straight forward

Vag cars use funny sizes so the drop link nut may be a 16/18 spanner / socket (cant remember)

Also you need a allen key to hold the thead while you tighten.

If you look at the new drop links it should become apparent

£50 for the parts including bolts and disposal, plus £60 for 30 minutes labor at a main dealer.

There's your £110.

£60 labour for half an hour?

These guys are £120 an hour?

Thats bloomin rediculous

Unlikely but they seem to charge only by the hour round here regardless.

The dealers charge loads per hour for labour but don't think the actual guy or girl doing the job will be getting £100+ per hour -  Thanks for the tip about raising both sides of the car up

First time I ever did drop links (on a Vectra) I did it one side/wheel off the ground at a time and was having to use a bar against the lower arm to get the roll bar to meet the new drop link. Forums can be godsends for stuff like this as was soon told to have both wheels off the ground and it takes all pressure off the roll bar.

A job like this would probably be given to the garage lackey so it's a given they wouldn't be on a great wage. I wonder what sort of salary the 'top' service guy in a dealership would command.

Ask for a discount and you'll take them home and chuck 'em in the wheely bin? (or be responsible and put them in the metal skip on your next tip run)

Did the same with my Puma, was a bugger to do with just one side off the ground!

There's no springs or tension in the ARB if you raise the whole front of the car evenly.
