Changing bulbs on TDI Projector headlamp

Featured Replies

Can you change the main bulbs on the projector lamps on a diesel without removing the fuel filter?

I have small hands but I can barely get them in far enough to touch the wiring on the bulb connector.

Then its impossible to twist it out.

If I need to remove the fuel filter what do I need to do?

It's possible. I recently upgraded my Monte to HID Xenon bulbs, and it was a pain in the arse with my large hands. I didn't have access to my tools, so couldn't move the filter.

As for twisting the bulb holder out.. get your fingers around it, find a comfortable place for your wrist first with some space around it, and give it some welly!

If you really do want to remove the filter, I hear you just unclip it from the housing and it comes out, but if you want it completely out, it's just a few bolts.

There is actually a lot of threads about this, more recently a quite popular topic about HIDs in H7 Projectors. Look on the Mk2 page and you'll see it - on the latest (or second latest) page someone says how you can move the filter.

^^^

+ 1 to that :)

Do they employ Oompah-Loompah's in the factory to fit the bulbs in the first place then??

I'm not looking forward to replacing my Bulbs when they need it as I have Mahoosive Meat-Hooks!!

Yes I read the other thread, it's your fault I started having a go at replacing the bulbs :p, I have had them sat around since christmas doing nothing.

I thought it might be easier for TDi people to find with it's own specific thread.

I just can't seem to get my hand in far enough to grip anything and then it seems impossible to try and twist.

I didn't have a good look at the fuel filter. How do you unclip it? It didn't look like it unclipped. But for me its the big metal arm that holds the fuel filter in that get s in the way.

For removing entirely I only remember seeing two torx bolts (I bet I don't have one big enough) didn't see a third one.

As for Ooompah Lommpahs I am thinking of getting my 8 yr old son to have a go for me. Just a little concerned he might cut himself on the metal bulb holders.

You can't change the bulbs at the roadside on most modern cars these days. On my old vectra it was easiest to drop the bumper and remove the headlamp unit, you could do it in 15mins once you got used to it!. But looking at how to remove the front bumper on the Fabia that isn't a simple job either having to remove the wheel arch liner etc.

It is a nightmare and be prepared for a lot of cuts and scrapes! The first time I tried, I gave up after much swearing and sighing etc. Second time (after an hour) both bulbs changed.

Second time around I put a microfiber cloth around the top of my hand, between the fuel filter housing and the inner bay. Might be worth doing as It stops your hand getting ripped to pieces that way! It is a pig of a job though without removing the filter out of the way.

Might get the Wife to do mine!!.. She's Remarkably strong, but has Dinky Hands! :D

to unclip the diesel filter, there are 3 black lugs around the top of it, unclip these and lift out the way, its so much better with it moved, i found it easier to use my right hand once in there though.

erm you are in swindon, i could do it for you.

I'm fine at the mo dude! :)

I'm still rockin' the OEM bulbs Skoda stuck in there...

I might PM you and take you up on that offer as and when they go 'POP' or if I just bite the bullet and get 2 sets of Nightbreakers on a whim!! :D

You might see me around Swindon if you keep your eyes out...

I can see the clips that remove the diesel filter but it's the housing thats in the way. Don't know if my car is different to others but the diesel filter is encased all around so you still can't get at the bulbs. See yellow highlight in attached picture

I tried three time last night to do the drivers side but have now given up. I don't have the necessary Torx (think it's a Spline) attachment for my socket/screwdriver set.

I am attempting to make a "thing" out of wood that will sit over the end of the bulb and give me somthing to hold on to.

Is the actual head lamp cluster (or whatever the front ones are called, the name inexplicably escapes me) easy to remove and do it this way rather than removing the fuel filter?

If Only :) You have to remove the front bumper to get the headlamp out (this is what I have done with previous cars) but its a right faff: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/238560-removing-front-bumper/

It's a full bumper off job.

If that blue thing is your Washer Bottle Filler, then it's totally different under your bonnet to what's under mine, yes I know mines only a little 3 pot 1.2 Diesel, but still the ancillarys should be in similar positions!!

That explains it. They are different mine the 1.6. The blue one at the bottom is the washer bottle. The blue to the top is the coolant.

It's amazing how different they package engines even if it's essentially the same engine.

My old Vectra was a 1.9 CDTi 8v. They also do the same engine but in a 16v. There is quite a difference between the two. Some things that were easy to access on the 16v are much more difficult to do on the 8v.

That blue thing is your coolant system, not the washer bootle...

I have 1.9 TDI in my car and everything looks excactly the same as in your car:

I have managed to fit the HID kit to my car yesterday and trust me, this is more tricky and requires much more space comparing to replacing the bulbs. The only thing I did was I unclipped the Fuel Filter and moved it away a bit. That's all...:)

It must be slightly different as unclipping the fuel filter does not help me. In your second picture you can see a little black tab just below and left of the two loops on the fuel filter. I am assuming these are what are used to release the fuel filter from the housing?

However the housing is what is in the way and when you remove the filter the housing is still there. On my car the filter housing fully covers the sides of the fuel filter.

EDIT: They are different. If you compare your second picture of the fuel filter with the fuel filter on my picture I don't have those two loops that yours has. Also the pipework is different.

Yep...the pipework is different but I think our fuel filters are placed in the excactly same positions...I hever had any problems replacing the H7 bulbs in my car...The side ones are pain in the **$£...

Thats odd 'cos the sidelights are easy on mine :D There is nothing in the way of those.

Maybe our headlamps are different. My Monte has one Projector light for Low and Main beam (this is what I am trying to replace) and the sidelight (W5W) is on its own in a separate part of the lamp.

Mine seems to be the same, I have projector headlight in my car but mine uses the same H7 bulbs for dipped and main beam.

The sides are really pain to take out and fit IMO. It's like trying to find a niddle in the dark for me...Been there, tried to repalce the standard ones with some Ebay LEDs which started flickering after two months so decided to buy some Philips and Osram once which are more expensive but give you at least 2 years warranty.

Excuse my childishness.

The Pre-FL Fab's are the other way round. Look at the profile of your car then look at the profile of mine. Yours have the projectors on the "inside" near the grille, ours have the projectors on the outside and vice versa for the sidelights. So where your sidelights are a pain in the backside, mine look like they'll be a doddle :D

We've hijacked another thread now.... Oh dear.

Different Projectors then...And yes, we have hijacked another thread...opsie daisy...I'm off...!!!! :giggle:

Another mystery solved then.

I ahve updated the picture to show where the bulbs are on my Monte.

It's the Low/Main bulb in the far left corner underneath the indicator that I am trying to change
