Poor MPG

Featured Replies

Good Afternoon,

I've read through a few threads but thought I'd start my own to gain some advice.

I have had my 52 plate Octavia a few weeks and all seemed well until the other day.........
I was cruising at approx 70mph and my oil light came on, I had no choice but to complete my journey as it was 02:30 in the morning.
I went to the car next day, checked the oil which was low.......started the car to warm it up and check again and the oil light went out.  I did however top the oil up and all seemed fine.  A couple of days later I drove the car for approx 100 miles on the motorway without issue, with an average of 35mpg which was as normal.  The following day I started the car as normal and it seemed a little smokey whilst I let it warm up, then when driving it seemed to be smoking more than usual but only for a few miles (and it is fine again now).  However the car seems to be under powered and low on MPG (approx 29mpg) since this occurred.

My question is 'Where do I start looking for a fault?'

Any advice much appreciated

Many Thanks

Dave

Er, with the oil level. You've said that it was low and you topped it up, but not whether or not it's dropping again. Some of the faults than can affect fuel consumption are associated with oil consumption.

Re Oil Level : There has been no major oil consumption to speak of but I will check the level again.

Thanks

Stupid question, did you use the correct oil when you topped it up?

If I remember correctly without looking I believe it was 5w30 which I use in my other turbo performance car.........is that good enough for one of these cars I would you recommend something different?

Thanks

Dave

5w30 is fine, I ran my last vrs from 100k to over 150k before I had to sell it and it never missed a beat or used a drop.

Mines a 55 reg with 172k on the clock. I found 5-30 too thin for an old engine (and would disappear) - Had 10-40 in for over a year now, uses about a pint every 3 thousand miles now.

Ok, if it's not using oil it probably does't have oily plugs (hence a bad spark). Try disconnecting the MAF to put it on the default map. If the running and economy improve, buy a new genuine MAF.
