Registration plate

Featured Replies

The reg plates on my new Citigo have been stuck on using double sided sticky pads. In the past I've found these ultimately fall off, usually in the middle of nowhere and you end up at your destination to find you have lost a plate. The rear plate has also been put on at a slight angle, which niggles me.

I've decided to screw the plates in place.

The rear reg plate area doesn't appear to have a cavity behind it - I don't want to drill into something I shouldn't. Any tips?

It really pee's me off when you pay thousands for a car and the Dealers can't be @rsed to put the plates on straight.

Shows how intrested they really are

Asked my dealer to use screws instead of sticky pads and was told 'sorry no, we only use sticky pads for the number plates'.

Bizarrely, I've had the reverse before, where a VW dealer told me they were only able to screw plates in!

IME, dealers also muck up things with screwing them in too - often by using self tappers straight into metal or plastic depending on what's behind the plate, when there are usually manufacturer pre-determined locations to use....

For me I much prefer them stuck on - looks cleaner, and the plate is then not able to de-laminate around where they've drilled, and often drilled badly - not drilling from the back surface forward. I've also never had them fall off. As long as the pads are good quality, and applied to a clean and dry surface.

Might be an idea to take the rear plate off and re-stick it using fresh pads. Where can I buy these from? Halfords?

You could take the car back to the dealers and ask them to do it for you!,its their mistake why should you have to rectify it?.

Ours have been screwed on front and rear and the rear plate is 3mm lower on the drivers side!

They have just screwed directly into the bumpers. No inserts! cheep and tacky

Yep, Halfords sell them. Or any motor factors. Or plenty on eBay.

3mm   just enough to mean having to reposition completely, to get away from the existing holes  :wall:

8mm hole one side and 11mm the other would sort it out if I wanted to bodge it. I just use it to remind the sales team who's boss!!!!! when I pop in and annoy them

When I had my Octavia from new (2006) the plates were stuck on and never came off in the 7 years I owned it. I don't like screw on plates for the reasons Wardy states :)

Mine were screwed on to the Citigo, and yes the rear one was wonky, I hate that.

On a very recent visit to the UK I noticed a friends brand new Audi TT Quattro with the rear late so out of line the fitter must have been drunk. Here in Germany we have a frame fitted first and the plates clip into the frame never ever seen a lopsided plated.

both our Citigo and Ocky ii have plates (Briskoda on the rear of ceach as I'm too tight to buy two sets) but they still drilled it wonky.

Cheers guys. Anyone know the best way to get the old plate off?

Dental floss or I use fishing wire. Then just gently saw through the adhesive pad.

Then remove the rest of the residue with white spirit/WD40.

Thanks. Sorted it yesterday with the Halfords tape. Wasn't as easy to get straight as I thought, lol. There aren't any straight edges to level up with, but I managed it. I can now see why a dealer doing the job quickly might have mis-aligned it slightly, although they do the job rather often . . .

I used sticky-stuff remover to get rid of all traces of the old tape from the car and the rear of the plate. Washed off the residue with detergent, made sure it was bone dry and used methylated spirit to ensure I had suitable surfaces to attach the tape.

I'm happy now!
