Removing lambda

Featured Replies

I am sure nut is 22mm but when I put on 22mm spannner (felt like good fit) and gave it a good beasting with a hammer, the spanner just seemed to go round and the nut stayed in place.

Likely not the best spanner in the world, but what other method is used for removing a lambda?  Due to the wiring/body etc, a normal socket can't be used.  I suspect I just need a real good spanner. :(

if its ****ed cant you cut the wires / end of it off so you can get a socket on ?

It's not ****** as you say :D   It's on a working car and I want to remove it as I have sold it.  Well, subject to me getting it out.  Therefore I do want to keep the plug on the end of it.

Plus I would need a deep 22mm and I am not sure I possess one.

Iirc it's only the initial loosening about 1/4 turn then it comes out by hand because I used the open ended 22mm socket on one

I like the idea of the open ended socket but don't really want to buy a £8 tool to use just once. :)   The mongrel doesn't have any O2 sensors :D

Yeah I was thinking the same so popped down to the local Indy garage who lent me the tool for a couple of days!

It is on a 1.4 16v, and this one appears to only have one O2 sensor, which is post cat.  Unless there is another one on the exhaust manifold?

I don't possess a heat gun.  I'm not that serious into my mechanicals :D

I melted the plastic top on an old BMW when I broke out the gas torch

Get an angle grinder and cut a slot in the top of a 22mm ring spanner

They can be quite difficult due to heat cycling and crud buildup on the inside of the exhaust/threads. Not quite exhaust manifold territory but prone to siezing/snapping under too much duress.

Tried penetrating spray etc?

Shall try WD-40 next time.  Just frustrating.  Other bolts came out nicely, even the 4 exhaust manifold bolts were pretty easy.

I'd recommend giving TMB's suggestion a try.

Get some proper penetrating oil, it works so much better then WD40.

Give plus gas a try!

I've got some "Shock & Unlock" from Halfords, it's crap.

The only other stuff I have is GT-85 and 3 in 1 spray.  What is actual penetrating oil?

Mine is in a tin with "Penetrating Oil" written on it.

As mentioned above Plusgas is another option.

I use plusgas which I'm happy with but their are many others about such as PB Blaster but I think that's mainly in the U.S.

Yes whereas GT85 and WD40 are only water displacement agents!

Maybe that's what the 'Shock' part means. It's so crap it's shocking :giggle:
