FUBAR's BMW E60 530D SE

Featured Replies

Thanks Jase, I have done, seems a real faff to get temps.   I will try the wifi obd 2 plug I have and torque app, should show the same thing.

Spanners might be getting a work out when we collect it.   :notme:

If its on the original stats chances are they are fluffed

thermostats will be done and swirl flaps will be evicted too, better safe than sorry.

Great write up mate. As we are about to collect a 330d, any chance you can tell me how you access the secret menu for temperature?

Also, have you bothered with the swirl flaps and finally, why change the thermostats?

That's all for now :notme:

Do the swirl flaps for sure they are not easy but will save you heart ache if the go! Blanking kit was about £30 and took me 2.5 hours ish well worth it

Who did you buy the swirl flap blanking kit off?

I have to get the swirl flap kit.

I have to get two thermostats (pending a check of the water temperature)

I got mine from PMW in Chelmsford I'm sure they do mail order, very good specialist our police mechanics used when the couldn't do it

I got mine from PMW as well, there are different sizes so for mine depending on what BMW decided at the time (mine was around a revised design) so I have another set here lol. Must return them tbh PMW is good like that you can return within 28 days for a £3 restocking fee I think. If you need 6 22mm ones I have some :p

Just did first real brim to brim post thermostats and flaps etc I was happy with the idrive saying 41mpg but in fact it was wrong :( 43.8MPG :D :D :D This was all small driving stuff approx zero motorway miles so well chuffed.

Must check with insurance about remap if not too bad it is time! If not I will wait until renewal and it can be a Christmas present for the car :D A remap in the snow.... genius :o

Method seems to be the same for all of them. No coolant temp guage is just dumb! The thermostate for the 3.0 diesel is 92Deg C I think. If it is an automatic it's a bit more of a job to change (belt driven fan needs disconnected for access, manual is an electric plug in fan) and there are 3 thermostats in autos.

Might as well log my crapy bits in here too :D

Yesterday evening on a crap road surface in the middle of nowhere, bang........ NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Front right tyre has blown out on a pot hole!

  • I stop
  • I get out
  • I walk around to near side and front wheel totally flat and a tear in side wall alloy damaged

Front.jpg

  • I hear a hissing
  • I look towards back of car
  • REAR WHEEL TOO!

Worst thing is the tyres were new!     :wall:

Also the total I have spend on VED this calendar year is £530 NICE!

Then today

Another day on Northern Ireland's glorious roads as managed and maintained by the Road Service of Northern Ireland.................... Loosing my patience with this crap, how many more times within a week will I need to be at side of road taking wheels off my friggin car!

Skipped a bit as I was waiting to get out of first junction for a couple of min. Grinding sound from 0:20 in vid was so loud and embarrassing!

14 minutes of my life I won't get back and a nice score on brake disc for my troubles..   :@

ps. The haters if they listen carefully will hear that my BMW has the fabled rare optional indicators  :o

But just before the crapy road surface niggle today I had washed my car as the midday sun was slowly taking the shadow off my drive and I got some snaps of the car........ again

Fubar, are you based across towards Cavan?  I think I have been across that road you are on. I was going from Belfast dock to Ballyconnell, I might be wrong though...

I am falling out with our e91 330d, only had it a week or two! Here is my post to fellow BMW types on another forum..

Well I have been the owner of a 330d BMW for two weeks now and so far I am losing the love mad.gif
First issue was when I fuelled it up, it decided that it would spew a gallon of fuel on the floor as there is an issue with the fuel tank breather, which BMW are fully aware of and charge £45 for piece of pipe to fix it, no recall though..
Then I had fun changing the air filter which compared to any other car I have ever owned is a complete faff. What is wrong with a few clips and ten minutes of your life to replace the element?
Today, I have ordered my swirl flap blanks, vortex filter, rubber gaskets round and square from PMW today which will give me piece of mind about the swirl flaps, which I had never heard of with any other car I have owned but seems quite acceptable to BMW and there owners.
Then to put a big downer on things my wife calls me in work today to say the car has bleeped and a few lights have come on, these consist of the brake warning light and a picture of a car on a lift in red. So when i got home I have had a look and to my horror I find the most unused friendly interface I have ever used, press this, hold that, push brake pedal, roll thing on the stalk and press BC button etc..... and to find out a code which was CC-ID71, then it off to Google to search what his could be.
I think I am correct in thinking it could be rear brake pads or brake pad sensors? The pads look like there is plenty of life in them though... I find this car to be, well, difficult, in every respect.

So, my questions to you guys to make life easier are these.

Do BMW cars randomly give there owners a re hard time?
Do BMW cars have lots of timers that tick down to put warning lights on so you feel obliged to go to the dealer?
Finally, I have owned many VAG brand cars from VW, Skoda, Audi and even a Seat, all of which are easy to operate and easy to work out the error messages when they occur, a simple straight forward message is displayed to tell you what the issue is! None of this WW 2 coding like the BMW. With the VAG cars I have used VCDS, a great piece of software that allows fault finding, diagnostics and coding adaptations to be carried out, what is the software and what lead do I need for BMW?

Please help me restore my faith in the 330d as I have always wanted one and now I have one I want to burn it help.gif hissyfit.gif

It could have been on your way, but most look just as crap in this area. If sat nav took you on a bit of a magical mystery detour you could have ended up there, it's in Fermanagh which boarders Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.

lol at all your wows with the E91. I changed thermostats straight away and ripped off inlet manifold for the flaps at same time to be safe. Air filter........... I wish I had one at the time as I was there (was serviced just before I got it, but what are the odds they couldn't be bothered)! Is your breather a loo roll type one then? I thought they were all vortex ones by then. Mine is meant to be I am worried now that I had dug out enough to get at it but didn't change it if that is not the case :o For your swirl flaps I would imagine on an E91 your very likely to be 32mm not the older 22mm ones? Mine is a 2004 and was one of the first with the new revised cartridge 32mm types that was meant to be a solution to the issue that BMW said didn't exist lol.

My sat nag did take me across country, I used to go to Belfast, Newtown Breda, then from there to Dungannon and then across to Quinn packaging in Ballyconnel, cement central! I really liked Ireland as every hotel I stayed in was always very friendly, good food and drink too.

I have bought the vortex filter just incase I need it as I am in there, I also bought both sets of swirl flap blanks, 22mm and 32mm, PMW will refund what I don't need. This weekend will be a big strip down so I am not going back in there! Unless a bloody light comes on and decided different.

Happy days, I forgot to return my 22mm ones lol. They charge a £2 or £3 restocking fee and you loose delivery, but still it's good to get from PMW as you know you are getting good stuff!

If it makes you feel better the wife destroyed two wheels yesterday

More re furbing for me

Then today
