Repair or Replace Engine

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

I've already posted details on our PROBLEMATIC 2005 Fabia 1 Petrol 12 car with a misfiring number one cylinder.

Its been into a local garage who's diagnostic machine says the same as the RAC Fault finding 'Misfiring number one cylinder'

The garage has done a pressure test on the cylinder and it reads 62 compared to I think they said 112 on the other two cylinders.

They think it could be a burnt valve on number one, but they cant be sure until the head is stripped down.

Top and bottom is they are saying cost is between 350 upto £600 dependent on what they find.

We  cant afford a new car just yet, would  I be better sourcing an engine from a accident damaged car, and If I put it in myself, would I have any problems marrying the engine to the existing EMS ? (Coding etc)

The car has only done 40k from new.

Any advice would be appreciated.

how much is the car worth? it's got to be worth them whipping the cylinder head off to have a look surely? a burnt out valve is not the end of the world and is repairable :sun:

I wont be worth a lot being a 2005 car.

My concern is this engine already been repaired previously with a crack in the cylinder head, its also had a new EMS.

Neither repair was cheap, I'm dubious of having another repair and it goes again.

I wouldn't mind but 40000 miles being driven my the wife who could be a hearse driver she's that slow !

Yep, maybe cheaper to strip it, scrap it and sell for parts and get another car, even working the car won't be worth an awful lot more than £600 anyway will it !

(Possibly worth a bit more than my old 1.4mpi that was 3 yrs older when sold but that was probably at least 3 yrs ago, and that was MINT working and sold for about £800-900 can't recall which).

Or get a Haynes book or look online and have a crack at it yourself, worse case scenario it doesn't work and you still have to strip it for parts, or best case scenario you get it working for far less than that !

Although it will start to add up if you don't have things like torque wrench, then you have to put engine parts, oils etc it does start to mount up so £600 perhaps isn't that unreasonable to cover cost +labour.

Big ask though, so if you are mechanically inept, time to consider if you are really up to it and maybe go down the dismantling route (If there is much you can get off it to sell, perhaps less than a more sought after model but there will still be bits people want to buy)
