Engine oil - which one?

Featured Replies

Looking at serving my VRS and was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations on oil?

Done 133K

I personally use 5w30 long life oil even though I change it every year. Mine has done 120k and since changing from 10w40 it does use a bit between changes. The reason I switched to that oil was my indie specialist told me the 1.8t engine is prone to coking up and oil pump failures on the thicker oil so rightly or wrongly I went with it. But my car seems fine on it so I've stuck with it.

Just to add, quantum from TPS. Recommended vag oil.

I use 5w40 triple-x from euro car parts. If you time it right sometimes it falls into there 50% off and you can get it for £12 lol.

5w30 is also fine. Fully syth is needed too

Quantum Platinum 5W-40 is cheap from TPS.

thanks for the replies. Digged into the receipts found out it had 5w40 last time so I'm going to stick with that I think.

Been using Castrol EDGE 5W-30 or Quantum LongLife III 5W-30 (they are the same thing) for almost 7 years in my car. I'll never use anything else.

It's more expensive than 5W-40, but will last much longer if it needs to.

+1 for Castrol EDGE 5W - 30

So is the castrol cheaper than the quantum?

Can of worms really. Everyone has their own preference and there are millions of internet pages arguing about the best oils!

Personally, having used and abused many cars with many different engines over the years, but having never suffered so much as a sticky tappet - let alone an engine failure, my money goes to Mobil every service.

I can only give you my findings on my own VRS.

Bought with 80k on the clock, but with a nice service history. Had a stage-1 REVO remap at this point, along with a Forge 007 and a Pipercross panel filter.

Car gets sympathetically warmed through every time from a cold start, and run down for a minute or two at the end of a drive. Does a mix of local shopping, motorway journeys, and the occasional highly irresponsible late-night hoons, bouncing off the limiter and being driven like it was stolen :D

Been using Mobil 1 0W/40 since 80k, changed every 10k with a new genuine vag filter each time.

Car is now on 140k and is utterly perfect, engine wise. Starts immediately, pulls like a train, doesn't smoke at all, has no rattles at all, and uses about 500ml of oil over 10,000 miles.

I dropped the sump pan last year and pulled the oil strainer in order to replace it with a new one, because Briskoda says so :D but the existing pickup was as clean as a whistle, and it just didn't need changing TBH.

So - Mobil 1 is my recommendation!

Used the same Mobil oil from Costco for 8 years and never had any issues.  Doesnt use any on the dipstick

I have been using castrol 5w30 for the last 200.000 miles and the engine is pretty clean from the inside (I recently removed the oil pan to do some re-threading and then changed the head gasket). I buy it from ebay.de for about 7£.
